That's interesting SB. You mean kinda like the German "don't mention the war" mind-set? Still, must be a fascinating place to visit though?
Absolutely - its really interesting, things look western but are totally different under the surface. Its taken me a long time to figure out how to work with my Japanese colleagues - I enjoy 'robust discussion' and don't mind people contradicting/ correcting me. These lads just won't do that - just nod, make up their own minds and really deliver the work. Takes an age to make a decision, but once done its acted on 100%. Was out to dinner with a couple this week, finished at about 10, I wandered back to hotel, they went back to the office.......bizarre, nothing they could do after a few beers, but they 'needed to'.
That work til you drop philosophy is prevalent in Germany too. Perhaps its a way to "bury the pain" as it were. Other Countries that have suffered in that War have used alcohol to suppress the hurt. Russia being a prime example. The closest I've gotten to a take on Japanese culture is the film "Lost in Translation"! What did you have for dinner by the way? Cold fish?
Sashimi (raw fish) and a sort of pork stew - excellent Tempura - prawns and vegetables flash fried in really light batter - brilliant 'do it yourself' beef stew and veggies - cooked on the table in boiling soy milk..... Hmm, not sure Sushi (raw fish on rice) and miso soup - really too stuffed by this stage to have an opinion Ice cream I'd also had a massive bowl of udon noodles and rice with chicken for lunch. I'm 50/50 on Japanese food - like it occasionally but after a few days start to crave pie and chips. And sushi, however trendy, is not a meal. It's a snack. WBA must join the discussion...... Apologies all for taking this thread so radically off topic......
I was just about to say the same thing! Sounds delicious mate. In ref to the thread itself (before Cerny starts annoying us!), MOTD2 is gonna be good tonight with that 8-goal thriller at OT.
SB/Swords - you little natter has reminded me of something a sceptic told me when I was over there, many years ago. I was told of a story regarding an American and his new Japanese boss. The boss was in the bar with some of his mates enjoying some American beer. The American employee comes over to their table and sits down, and starts slagging off the Japanese (as a nation and people). The boss says nothing and just quietly nods and listens to his employees' rant. Eventually the American gets bored and stands up and says "at least we won the war" and walks over to the bar. The Japanese man walks over to the bar as well and orders a round of drinks for his groups and also one for the American, just as the Japanese man walks away he stops and whispers in the Americans ear "who said the war is over?" I also note that gayreth fail did not feature in the Lower Loft in MOTD and there was no mention of it either....or that he didn't get a yellow for it...then again..not one cock did all eveninig. COYRsssssssss
Think so Roller, wish I could remember what they called it. When it was described to me I was expecting something more like the Korean BBQ - oiled hot plate on which you throw your meat. but this was a bubbling pan of soy milk. Bit too, well, milky for my taste....
Good joke at Sav's expense there on MOTD2. Maybe that funny looking little presenter ain't son bad after all? M U v Eve on now.
I knew a guy who was from the old east germany, they were not taught anything about WW2 in school but the younger ones dont mind it, Allo Allo has got a cult following there. I can imagine the japanese not being happy about it even now, they are extremely polite and they probably feel its very rude for anyone to bring it up, they cant help what their ancestors did.
