My friends and I are all born in the 80s Metalheads, and we were discussing the most overrated song ever written by a rock artist.

Obviously that's a list with huge potential, but eventually after three hours of heated debate we settled on Freebird by Lynard Skynard. It was a toss up between that, St Anger by Metallica (the song not the album, obviously) and Killing in the Name of by Rage Against the Machine.

Anybody got any others that if it comes on, you immediately feel the need for a smoke or a slash?

Any song by metallica

Gonna sound cliched but I think the older stuff stood the test of time better than their 2000 nu metal era efforts. There was a reason that channels like Kerrang! were playing Enter Sandman and Master of Puppets during those years and not their newer stuff.

Same with Slipknot I guess.

It's Layla by Eric Clapton. A whiny racket written by a weapons-grade ****.

freebird was the first that came to mind when i saw the thread title.

There’s a few by Guns and Roses that are overplayed and overrated.

I think Bohemian Rhapsody is one of Queen’s worst songs too.

Agree with St anger but not the other 2. Tbh could easily be a pick of a number of wilderness years Metallica stuff.

Id say anything by Nickelback personally. Or Disturbed.

How late can we go and can we include all genres of rock? Because as much as I enjoy Arctic Monkeys, I find a lot of the songs from their first album to be juvenile ****e despite fans loving it but I consider Humbug to be one of my favourite albums, despite it being somewhat overlooked.

We can. @Quill might have something to say about that though, I'm sure he once told me off for saying Arctic Monkeys were "chav rock" and sang songs about drinking white lightning and fingering birds on the top deck of a bus.

They're decent though.

WPSIATWIN is ‘chav rock’ though, you’re right. The first album has not aged well imo and it’s fairly crap and juvenile. It’s a nostalgia trip for people who still go to Welly.

Humbug, on the other hand, is a masterpiece.
