Most overrated for me is Ashley Young. Complete one trick pony, always cuts inside, falls over a lot and offers very little when not in possession <ok>

I'm also going to throw Neymar into the equation. Not necessarily as a candidate but is anyone else annoyed at just how much pundits and commentators laud him up as if he is the son of christ? it just seems like laziness to me... They've heard his name and the clubs that were chasing him so he must be the worlds best player... (which he may well prove to be the case)

As for Carroll. It's the same as Crouch when people argue "he's got a good touch for a big man" - Too ****ing right he should have! He's a professional footballer! But he is and will never be in the same league as Drogba et al. lacks the natural talent and athleticism to truly make him a world wide force <ok>

If he knuckles down and works hard he could easily become a top player in the Premier league as he is a handful and will probably score his fair share of goals but he is ultimately an epitome of modern day 'British football' overpaid and overpriced with overexpectation that underwhelms on the big stage (international) as he isn't as technically gifted as our European cousins. Will certainly be a decent player in the Prem though...

just out of interest, how many people thought drogba was a big pile of ****e after his first year with chelsea? there was a wide-spread condemnation of his ability based on one year - he was a laughing stock. anyone who watched him closely will have seen there was a real star inside, waiting to be unleashed. i see the exact same thing with carroll - whether he can be arsed to unlock his full potential is another thing but its there alright. oh, and he's much, much, much better than crouch in every single way imaginable <ok>

I don't but this Carroll business, he is nothing more than a very average player. If he wasn't 6 foot 4 he wouldn't be anywhere near the Premier League or Allardyce's team. I don't think he has the mobility to be a top Premier League forward and I don't think there has been any point where he has been the best striker in the Prem. I think he looks better when Nolan is behind purely because they seem telepathic, that's intelligent play on both their parts don't get me wrong but without him I think don't think he is up to scratch. I agree the money and pressure hasn't helped his development, plus the incidents he had during his time with Newcastle, but he is never worth £15 million, let alone £35 million. Shane Long is a better forward than Carroll, if West Brom valued him at £15 million and 80k a week everyone would think they were mad, just like most people think West Ham are mad. For what it's worth Carroll is a better forward than Crouch. Carroll can bring the ball down and head the ball at least, whilst Crouch is just like a moving lamp post. The ball hits him rather him him cushioning the ball or directing it. For what it's worth Carroll is a better forward than Crouch. I rated Drogba from the start, I visit France a lot and remember watching a Marseille game on the tele and thinking that Drogba player is quality, I was about 9/10 years old. Next thing he was playing for Chelsea and that was the start of their revolution. It was one of the first times I really got into football and followed European football to a degree, before that I could probably have named about 10 players who played outside England. I like him from the minute I watched that game and to be frank can't really remember how he was rated in his first season in England. I was a kid.

They both got 7 goals and 4 assists last season. How does that make Carroll 'much, much, much better than crouch in every single way imaginable'?

i'm not talking statistics, i'm talking ability! there is no comparison between the two in terms of ability that would be fair

But surely the most accurate and objective measure of a striker's ability is the amount of goals and assists they provide?

of course not! are you suggesting that grant holt (15 goals in 2012) is better than luis suarez (11 goals in 2012)?

    i mean, i know it's close but... ;)

From those stats I would suggest that Grant Holt had a better conversion rate, and was therefore a more prolific finisher, than Luis Suarez in 2012, yes. You said Carroll was better than Crouch in every way imaginable.

    he is.

don't get me wrong, crouchy has had a very good career, very good indeed, but he is extremely limited. carroll can do everything crouch can but better and a whole lot more after that.

it's not about stats - stats can tell you what ever you like. it's about watching the guy play, watching what he does. honestly, they are very different in everything but height.

I would say that their ability in a lot of different areas is very similar, and, if we were talking about the Peter Crouch of five years ago, I think he'd probably just about edge it. Carroll is the better player but I really don't think the gulf is as big as you make it seem.

totally fair, that was an astonishing goal! he has good tekkers but he is limited in many areas of his game. one wonder goal in a blue moon doesn't make him a great player, if it did then i'd be putting robert rosario forward <ok>

i think given a bit of time, there'll be a few who see carroll in a very different light one day (assuming he can be arsed on £100k a week!). undervalued on here and elsewhere, but not within footballing circles, that's for sure - you can tell that by the price tags - even if £35m was always extreme. footballing people like him, a lot. fans it seems, not so much <laugh>

But who, other than West Ham, were interested? Carroll delayed so long because he was waiting for another team to come in for him and they never did! And you can't deny £15m is extortionate...

i think a better question would be, who were liverpool willing to sell him to?

we know newcastle put a package together for him but couldn't afford the wages. we know arsenal came in at the last second too. people wanted him. ferguson was interested in taking him to united before liverpool went mad with the money. i bet hughton wanted him. we could never afford him in a million years - no doubt many of you will be relieved by that but he'd have made us a much better team and i can imagine RvW would have had a field day feeding from him.

and i'd say £15m is exactly the amount liverpool should have paid for him.

Do you really believe he is that good? I mean how would you rate him, good international/ world class? I have seen a fair bit of him and I just dont think he is that good. Ok yes but somewhat limited.

I've heard nothing of Arsenal being interested in him and I highly doubt that they'd rather have signed Carroll than Higuain (they wouldn't be getting both). I would have loved to see Carroll at Carrow Road but for no more than he's worth, which is absolutely no more than £10m. West Ham are his level for the time being and there are reasons for that.

if he gets his head down and progressed as he should, he has the core attributes to be one of the most devastating strikers on the planet.
