I agree, hate is not a word I would use to describe any Southampton player past or present. It's sad that the word 'hate' is brandished around so easily these days. I had no idea that people looked so badly on players within the current set-up, either these people need to grow up or they need to take a real good look at themselves. Apologies to everyone, I created this thread without expecting there to be the kind of responses there has been.
You really do not need to apologise..........and just to correct one statement.......the statements aren't ridiculous. You may not, as I do not, agree, but they are opinions. Saying they are ridiculous is rather a outlandish statement too! Just my opinion.......for what it is worth.
Agreed, StGreg10. Even my most hated player, Kanchelskis, was merely a bloke who I thought was a bit of a twerp. I don't actually hate any player, even opposition players. I'm not even sure I hate anything. Indifference and mild dislike are the most emotive reactions I can muster for everyday situations. But, as you say, the hate word gets bandied about, with abandon. The love word doesn't get anything like as much exposure nowadays, that it used to. Signs of the times, I suppose. EDIT: I've altered your quote too. It's pretty much the same disappointment level. Some of the reactions are a bit over the top. That's football supporters for you. Black or white, and nothing in between. Bit worrisome really.
Yeah, fair comment - i've edited my post to be a bit more diplomatic! Just can't believe people have such negative opinions of players in the current setup! Also 'hating' past players aswell - bemuses me completely
can't bring myself to hate any current or former player. when they pull on the red and white they deserve our support and respect. the only thing that takes away that respect is a lack of effort. I can accept a players limitations as long as they put in the effort. One of those sort of players was Paul Telfer. brought in by WGS, he was never a MLT, but he always put in 100% effort, and would do a job wherever the manager wanted. i really liked him as a player as a result.
Two things: 1. How Dickson has been unproffesional at the club. People who dislike him for one mistake must be of a low life form. I like Dickson and he is working hard to get back in the team. If there is something wrong with this the I must be missing something. 2. How has Puncheon disrespected the club. He never refused to play and he played for the reserves.
Mine has to be Lloyd James, absolute shocking player who strutted around the town like he was a superstar, I remember going to an midweek away game and watching us get stuffed only to get home and go out to that **** whole that is junk and find Mr James sat in the ViP drinking champagne! I was not impressed.
Sadly, James was around at a time when there were a group of young players doing exactly the same thing. Luckily in the end, all of them were shipped out - some have grown up and gone on to better things, others have not. Let's count ourselves lucky that with Adkins, no player with that same attitude would make it into the team now!
I absoloutely cannot understand how people are saying Dickson is their most disliked Saints player - god, I'm not even saying that about Harding! Firstly, what on earth has Dickson done wrong on the field to warrant it? One mistake against Utd hardly justifies someone choosing him as their most disliked Saint ever! Secondly, I've never heard of any off-field problems or issues, or any attitude problems, etc that should deserve this extreme criticism. He seems quite a down to earth lad to me, and I'd like to think that he's trying really hard in training to try and win his place back. By all means favour Harding over Dickson (although I'm keeping my fingers crossed that with Fox here now, he will end the debate!) if you're a Harding fan, but that doesn't mean Dickson should suddenly become your most disliked player, just because he is sometimes picked ahead of your favourite.
It has to be Terry Hurlock - for all his hard-man image at Saints and Rangers (which is why Souness signed him), he wasn`t very good at kicking people. Completely useless and anti-football. Anyone else remember him ?
BWP and Nathan Dyer. Potentially talented but they brought the name of the club into disrepute by stealing handbags from nightclubs. Completely reprehensible.
I find it difficult to dislike any Saints player expecially if they are obviously trying. However, when signing a player I don't like it's always a problem. Kevin Phillips springs to mind in that regard. He then compounded this with the way he left. Then you get players who I did not particularly like initially but later became legends such as Terry Hurlock. A fine bruiser to have in midfield (I'm trying to put a positive spin here on the dark days of Branfoot). Steve Baker was difficult to like due to his total incompetence but he rarely played so that made him easier to bear and he did obviously love the Saints and he did perform to the best of his limited ability at times. The same could be said for many others though since the 1980s departed.
Bruce Grobbelaar was a dirty money grabbing idiot to be fair. Phillips slated southampton and the fans when he left. You can't hate or dislike a player for making one mistake on the field thats just madness. Brucey took bribes. to throw games and has never denied he threw a game while he was at saints.
Paul Moody Paul Williams Lee Todd Nicky Banger Neil Heaney Ulrich Van Gobbell Ali Dia Graeme Potter Kerry Dixon Richard Dryden All of the above were complete sh1te !!!!!!!!!!!
