Morison and formations

Afternoon all,

A lot of people around me in the Barclay were getting very frustrated with Morison's performance (although he was not the only one yesterday). This has been a growing opinion. I am a bit mixed myself and feel he is not helped by the formation. His strength is in the air and for me, he suits the lone striker role, not 4 4 2 as yesterday. Holt is better in that formation.

If playing Morison I would go with width (Bennett and Pilkington) 4 5 1. Get quality balls in and he will score.

If 4 4 2, Holt and Jackson, with Morison on the bench.

Thoughts?
 
I'm not sure it is a matter of formation.

The question for me is if Morison is really Lambert's type of player.
 
Morison is clearly not a crap player. For whatever reason at the moment he's hit a snag. Thats fine! Footballers are allowed to have a **** run of form. It looks like he's frustrated and he's taking it out on his effort.

It's not like he's Fernando Torres, he has been scoring and i'm sure he'll continue to.

He needs Lamberts guidance. Whether thats a kick up the arse and the hairdryer treatment or a simple, civil, conversation is up to him. Lambert will deal with him and i'm sure he'll be scoring again soon.
 
Holty would have chased down a lot of the balls Morison gave up on!!!
Why was he arguing with Ward in Leicesters penalty box when we had a corner about to come over? It looked as if he told Ward to clear off.
His attitude stinks at the moment.
I'm very annoyed by that performance, that's the worst we've been for a very long time.
Thats all I'm going to say as I know **** all about football!!

Holt adds so much more to our game because, frankly, he's Grant Holt.

It's not fair to compare them. Morison however has the abilities to match Holt, he just needs some management. Lambert will sort him.
 
Apparently when Morison got substituted he had a row with Lambert and refused to shake his hand. Attitude like that and he'll be gone soon enough.
 
I watched the highlights of the home game against Swansea courtesy of Canaries player a couple of weeks ago and Morison was terrorising their defence, but recently, he has not been the same player, so maybe needs to be left out of the squad for a few games and see what Vaughan can do instead.

I was amazed to hear that Wes got MoM from the sponsors!!! How?????

Interesting Carra! For me if you buy a player you should go with his strengths. I must admit he strikes me as a bit Chris Martin like in his game although Martin would have putthat early chance away. It would have been a different game if that had happened
 
He's gone off the boil a bit recently. Yes, part of that is down to the formation, its no coincidence that we've stopped playing 4-5-1 with him as a lone striker and the goals have dried up.

Unfortunately, yesterday was down to his attitude. As has been mentioned numerous times in the last 24 hours, he didn't look bothered. That may have been down to two things early in the game, one is the chance he had that Surgery mentioned, the other was being beaten to the ball that resulted in Leicester's first goal. Maybe the two incidents combined and he thought it was going to be one of those days.

Sorry to pick up on your comments ILD - I'm making you the scapegoat, but you're not the only one to make similar comments!

Firstly, Morison doesn't ever give up on a ball that he could catch, he's just more efficient than Holt in that way, he knows when he's not going to catch the ball. Plus, I think that Holt reads the game better than Morison. The reason it may seem that Holt is more hardworking is because he's onto the balls more quickly.

Secondly, I doubt he was telling Ward to clear off. They will have discussed the way to approach corners in training - Ward was probably badly positioned.

And his attitude does NOT stink - he's just frustrated. His performance was poor yesterday and he took it out on himself, cutting a very downcast figure on the pitch. He's not lazy, he's just demoralised.

If he did decline Lambert's hand yesterday, however, that is intriguing. I find it difficult to believe, but I think it was probably because he was annoyed at himself, not Lambert, if true. Even if it was the case, I'm sure he will have apologised by now.

If I may slightly alter the phrase, just this once: In Morison We Trust.

I agree. I know I mentioned in my post about his attitude yesterday, but that was a one off. He usually gives his all in each game, but yesterday his body language was that of a person who looked like he'd rather be somewhere else. That being said, the majority of the team looked like that.

As you said, he gets a lot of flack for being lazy, but that is in part down to Holt. Holt will chase anything and everything regardless of whether he thinks he can actually get to the ball. Sometimes he gets to the ball, sometimes he doesn't but forces a mistake, sometimes he gets nothing. Again, as you mentioned, Morison is more efficient in this respect, but unfortunately a lot of supporters will see Holt haring around like a mad thing, see Morison being more choosy with what he chases and decide he must be lazy.

My only real gripe with Morison and it has been since the first game he played for us is his first touch. He will often get into good positions and his first touch lets him down.

Oh god, yes! His first touch is appalling. If he ever partners Jackson again then heaven help us - neither can control a long ball if their lives depended on it - part of the reason we lost yesterday, I might add. It'll improve though, don't worry.

That's my point, Morison cannot link up well with another front man, Better as a lone striker and getting to quality crosses.
 
I quite like Morison despite his apparent coldness. My son thinks he's a tosser and should be sold. Just peoples opinions. He has this knack of winning the ball sometimes against the odds but then not having the ability to do anything with it. I know ILD and Supers have been arguing about when he drifts wide. I don't mind him doing this if he does something with it but I don't think he has the sharpness or ability to do too much. He dribbled dangerously into the box Saturday and just gave it away on a plate without even looking up. His strength definitely is in the box (apart from the 1st minute obviously) and when that deserts him he can look a passenger. But I still like him.
 
His first touch is bad and that's difficult thing to work on you can improve it though, but it's one of things you grasp when your young like a basic part of your game but a very important one if he can develop thats great though. If that is true about him refusing to shake Lamberts hand then he can do one, we don't need prima donna's and attitudes at the club.
