The day is coming though isn't it? However you look at it, Wenger can't have more than 2 or 3 years left before he moves over. The unrest from the fans is growing, seemingly on a game-by-game basis at the moment. You only had to see the AGM to realise that. Gazidis says that Arsenal will be in a position to compete financially in 2 years. What bugs me, is investment NOW is key to that. Invest now, win a trophy or two, and the sponsorship value will more than make up for that spending. Don't spend now, fall out of the Top4, the value of the club & thus sponsorship deals falls and the club is tied in to long term mediocrity for years to come. The last year has been a tipping point, and the lack of foresight of the board or Wenger or whoever is responsible is damaging the long-term prospects of the club at present. Next year is the LAST year before the sponsorship deals are up for grabs. I want good January investment, a strong end to the season, and a great season next year to up the value of the deals. Sadly, if Arsenal are way out of the Top4 by January, no stellar signings will happen and the future of the club as a top team is in doubt.
Yeah this is the problem with our overtly conservative strategy. If we had invested a little more over the last few years just to strengthen our obvious weaknesses we would probably have won at LEAST one major trophy. (and the revenue generated in shirt sales, sponsorship etc.. would undoubtedly cover the money spent) Either that or just simply STOP selling our high profile players. In 2007 if we had in fact added another Quality striker (or kept Henry) we probably would have won the league. In 2010-11 we played a large chunk of the Season WITHOUT a centreforward. We had a fabulous midfield that year who knows what we would have achieved had we had a couple TOP quality strikers in the team. There's some risk attached to spending but you dont win big if you never gamble.
Sadly this may well be the case. I don't think anyone on that board has the genius David Dein had in plucking an unknown gem.
