Seemed to run a bit keen early due to the very slow pace and couldn't quicken with the others at the furlong pole, maybe a truly run 1M 2F or a step up to 1M 4F would suit? Not to worry... He'll be a bigger price the next day! Hope everyone is safe & sound. Good Luck
IMO Ron I think Crowley gave a terrible ride the inside is the slowest part of the course and he had a chance to get out but just stayed there plus I think he's now 0-18 when riding for attwater
oh well. Not what we all hoped for but just one of those things. I don't think the jockey was at fault. The pace of the race was against Squire and he got done for toe.
Just watched the race. He pulled far too hard early and was green when the battle started. Ran on well enough in the end. I think he would be better elsewhere given false pace is often an issue at Lingers.
I have just watched the race also, I felt the ride was fine as sat 4th and 5th throughout which is perfect for Lingfield, there was a brief moment when the leader was coming back onto him and he had to pull out but he did so with plenty of time to launch a run. What was missing was the change of pace, but he did not stop running. With regard rides the horse given the worst ride in the race was the winner as the story of his race could read, drawn 3 but failed to ride start and got swallowed by the field, sat last 2 or 3 and had to be pulled out widest and make ground on the final turn to race down the outside. Now normally this story would never be rewarded with a win and this is why it was a strange race in that they did not go mad early yet the winner came from behind. The winner is worth following now having hit this kind of form and winning from that ride. In all it is early days and the horse will still be learning and being learned about and so there will certainly be other days for Squire. I would be thinking of a 10f grade 5 or maiden at Kempton.
Thanks stick for the info. Invested reasonably heavily but it was from winnings you help me accumulate. It is good to get info from owners as it gives us punters half a chance. Assume that you invested very heavily but hopefully he will get it back for you in the future
Nice to read some sympathetic messages on hear fellas so thanks for that. It's been a tough day that's for sure but nobody died! Fairly good assessment from Bluesky. They went a real dawdle for the first two furlongs and JC was told that if they went to slow to let him lead if he had to. We knew he would get the trip and so did JC. He had the choice to make early and he chose to sit in behind having had a bit of a tug of war with the horse. Coming down the hill he was going well enough but a fancied runner in front of him, Dream Ruler, was stopping and our boy had nowhere to go. He couldn't switch out as there was no gap until a few yards from the home bend. He was in the clear but had didn't quicken and stayed on at the one pace only to be fourth. Jc said he made another noise again but he knew he hadn't given him the greatest ride and it could just have been a get out of jail card. Gutted for everybody that lost money on him today as we really did think he would win. We gambled him like men and lost like men! If there is a positive for us owners it is that we have learned today how not to ride him. He didn't have a change of gear today and we guess that last time we were flying past poor and beaten horses. We will have him out again in a couple of weeks and it will be at Kempton over eleven furlongs. Hopefully he will repay the faith although I guarantee I will not be yelling from the rooftops as I was today. Lesson learned. To all of you who lost money on him today I am truly sorry, I feel your pain!
70 looks a bit harsh to me, Id have said 65-66 would have been fair, the 3rd from the Kempton race was tailed off next two from 64 and 62, the Godolphin horse in 4th appears to have beaten unadulterated muck on its next run at 2/9, the 5th beat 1 home in next two runs. The Lingfield run looks a bit better on paper but he was held up out of the race and finished pretty tamely among horses who had took part in it. Salmon Sushi was given a similar ride in the race but finished much stronger and has since won a maiden and went close off 80. I wouldnt say 70 is beyond him but as an initial mark it was harsh enough on the evidence and possibly influenced by soft ride at lingfield, ran a decent race today for first time in a handicap and should be capable of winning races with a bit more experience if they can get him to settle better. Tripwise its hard to say, Teofilo out of a Darshaan mare, he is shaping like a 1m4+ type in time but you couldnt be sure until he relaxes a bit more. Id give him another couple of runs 1m - 1m2 round that dog track, try to get him settling early and maybe drop a few pounds before going up in trip to have another real go, 1m3 at Kempton maybe.
Please don't feel like you have to apologise Stick we all gamble at our own free will. I personally appreciate the info you put up its a unique position to be in when a horses owner can pass information on so please don't be discourage from doing so in the future. You were confident and rightly so but like everyone knows nothing is guaranteed in this sport. I backed 3 horses in various bets in that race including yours and didn't get one in first three!! Like you said you've learned something more about your horse today and so on to the next race it is. The main thing is the horse came back ok.
Spot on Smokey though how the fook did you manage to back 3 horses in that race? All grown ups Stick, nobody forces me to have a punt.
Hi, totally agree with all of the post race comments and fully endorse the view that we place our bets on knowledge and information on the understanding that we do on occasions beat the bookies. It wasn't our day today but we have had some great scoops in the past and often Stick has been the provider of some wonderful tips. Don't be afraid to keep the info coming, we'll recoup our losses and the Cheltenham pot will be overflowing come the 2nd week in March.
As has already been said Stick, nothing to apologise for as you kindly passed on info with good intention. I know you will have had a crap day but we all know that in this game we actually learn more about the game and ourselves when we lose rather than when we win. Anyone can win well and have a good day but it takes a gentleman to lose well, have a bad day and still be able to find a smile. Alternatively, should anyone moan here's how to deal with it from areal pro
Just had my first look at the race. What an interesting affair. There are so many things in hindsight that can be said about how Squire should have been ridden. One of the most telling things about what was offered to the rider, was the option of going forward if need be. For me, as it turned out, the horse's best chance was lost in the first furlong or so when JC handed up the possible lead. He wasn't to know though that the pace would be such a crawl. The result being, they traveled so slowly that even as the passed the half way mark, there was only three parts of a length between the first three. The rider was reactive, not proactive. But hindsight is a wonderful thing. Others have said that the horse needs a solid pace, I agree. Not being a great believer in jumping classes, I'd be after a weak, upcountry maiden. It's hard enough to get that first win without having to take on horses that have already done the deed. Even though the winner has been off the boil of late, the fact is, she had already won 7 times going into yesterday's race, and yet still received a massive pull in the weights off Squire. The second horse had won 4, and had the same weigh. The third horse had won 3 and got a 4 pound advantage. Stick my friend, you've forgotten more about UK racing than I'll ever know, but when the trainer first mentioned a class five event, I'd have jumped up and down big time. I have to disagree about the horse's program, I don't think he was too well placed at all yesterday. The above is only the offering of a lightweight Stick, please feel free to tear me apart mate.
I wont tear you apart cyc, its interesting to hear what people think. The feedback on here reinforces a lot of my views. It was only his fourth run against and his first against experienced handicappers and we are still learning with him. He is also still maturing. He gets sore shins from time to time which is a real sign of a slow maturing horse. You have to take the view of are you happy with your mark after three runs. The problem is finding a maiden over the right trip, there are far more handicaps on offer than maidens on the AW and you regularly run into the top yards in maidens! We were more than happy with his mark as we think he is worth more. I take issue with Boris about his mark, look what Stonecutter is rated now who he beat at Lingfield despite having trouble in running! He cannot be judged on the Kempton run as the trip was definitely too sharp. We sat off a slow pace yesterday when they dawdled for the first 1/4, It really didn't suit him. He also didn't get a run coming down the hill as the one in front of him was stopping. He doesn't have a change of gear so he got outsprinted from the turn but in the ideal world we would have reached the turn in a couple of lengths clear and in full stride. I am sure he is better than that given the right ride, we wont make the same mistakes next time he runs. We will look for a 1m 3f handicap at Kempton and if there is no pace we will let him bowl along. Mark my words Boris he will be winning off 70 before too long!
Onya Stick, I really think the horse has wins in him and as he finished just off the placed horses who've all done well in the past, says heaps. As you said, he's young and still learning the ropes, so I can see some wonderful times ahead for you and the fellow owners. It's too bad racing can't make the effort to supply maiden races, there must be a heap of owners out there with the same problem. Anyways, the good times are just around the corner mate.
