Rumours abound that Utd and the Chavs are in talks regarding a fee for Modric. This does not surprise me as Levy will always listen where money is involved but seriously?

If Levy really wants to move the club forward surely he must realise we cannot continue to let our best players go to Utd. or whoever every couple of years, I am personally getting ****ing sick of it. Fergie comes knocking and Levy bends over and takes in the ass, all be it for big money.

This would surely be a massive backward step to agree to sell what is easily our best player without having any deals in place to bring in someone of near/equal quality.

I know the old saying about "no player is bigger than the club" but that is not the point, we surely need to keep our best players and bring in more quality up front who can actually convert the chances our quality midfield creates.

If this happens it will leave a nasty taste in mouth and surely players like VdV who have commited themselves will begin to reconsider their position and look elsewhere, we need to show ambition to keep our best players and attract more.

In summary, **** off Fergie, Roman, Merc City et al.

No one player is bigger than the club, but if you sell Bale, Modric, and VDV you will drop down the league big style.

I suppose it will come down to if he wants consistent Champions Legaue football whilst pushing for league titles or playing on channel 5 on a Thursday evening whilst competing for 5th place.

I know where I'd rather play my football.

This is obviously the concern and would understand him wanting to take the bigger wages and challenge consistently for honours but the issue here is the club being a "selling" club, Levy should say "not for sale" or at least slap a mammoth price tag on him and tell anyone who bids less to **** off.

Levy has to decide whether he wants to keep taking the money or develop the team so we can become one of those team consistently challenging. <ok>

Your first word said it all.........Rumours,Rumours, Rumours, that's all it is, Levy knows best, do you seriously think he will take backward steps now, after this season? Levy and Harry know whats best to take the club forward, the club may have to cut it's cloth once the new stadium is sorted out. But I seriously doubt Modric will go unless 1 of 2 things happen, 1. Harry has someone else lined up, or 2 Luca is in the same frame of mind as Berbatov, which I seriously doubt, so do yourself a favour have a nice cup of tea, sit down, relax and leave it to Harry!!!

But I'm sure you'd all agree that he'd be a really top player for United.
Credit for his excellent season should go to both Luka and Harry, he's proved he can play in CM and not be bullied and can totally control games.
His only season in the Champions League has also proved he can do it on the main stage and I'm sure he'll continue to play well in the Champions League if he signs for Manchester United or another top 4 team.

ronaldo signed a deal the season before he left and even in the last game of the season he said he wants to stay.

dont let contracts fool you. theyre purely to get a player more money and the club a bigger transfer fee when the time comes to go.

In my opinion It is all down to Levy. If he accepts a bid then Modric will be off. Not necessarily to us, but abroad also.
I can't see Modric turning down a move like this if a bid has been accepted.

If Spurs hold firm and reject all bids then I also can't see him throwing a strop.
I think for him -he's likely to call things as he sees them.
He's hardly going to come out now and say " I want to leave" before a formal bid has been made.

Essentially, I think the ball is firmly in Levy's court.

Why shouldn't people speculate/ debate it?
It's not like Modric leaving Spurs to join United would be the weirdest thing the football world has ever seen...

Have to agree with a few of the posts above that a new contract and declaration of love for the club means **** all, how many players have said one day they wnat to stay only to do a u-turn the next day and leave for more money. All the new contract does is increas the price and potential suitors will have to pay. Levy is s mart man andif he knows bids are coming in this is exactly the kind of move you would exect him to make to maximise any fee should we be "forced" into selling one of our top players.

@Spurf, aprreciate it is only "gossip"/rumour but this seems a likely outcome given the history, Modric would be superb @ Utd. (as he is for us) and is exactly the kind of player they are missing, if they sign him make it title #20.

The basis of this discussion is rumour, but worse than that it is also a reflection on the way money dominates the game. The poaching of players by the larger clubs at the expense of others is IMO a very sad aspect of the game as is the domination by money. Yes Spurs are guilty of this as well. The United team with the likes of Giggs, Scholes, and others who were developed by them is something to be proud of. Less credit, if any, can go to just useing your financial muscle to 'nick' the best from other teams.

I like football but I do not like these aspects of the game, it ruins any chance of a level playing field and distorts the effort put in by clubs and fans to move their club forward.

I will always respond in a negative manner to celebration and speculation of such events.
