Interesting that, after two years Mitrovic still polarises opinions. Most centre on the assumption that in the championship he has found his level. This is nonsense. At Newcastle and at Fulham he has demonstrated that he can score goals in the premiership and more importantly, he is proven at the highest level which is at international level. In the recent Euro qualifiers Serbia scored 19 goals – of which Mitrovic scored 10.
Another accusation that has been levelled is that he is lazy. This is untrue. His hold up play is excellent, as is his defensive duties – in short he has become a more mature player, his positional awareness is excellent – you don’t score 15 goals in 18 games without being in the right place at the right time. Another point to make is that his behaviour has improved – for sure is it is never going to be perfect, if fact his has served a one match ban for five yellows and this is going to be a constant throughout his career.
There are those Newcastle fans that would have Mitrovic back, but under the management of Bruce this would be a disaster. This is a manager who has had 10 other clubs – Newcastle being his 11th and, apart from a couple of playoffs he has won nothing,
his tenure at Sunderland was a disaster and his record of
improving players is not good, a case in point is the way he handled Jack Grealish, now under a new manager Grealish is on the verge of an England call up.
Finally, on the subject of Mitro’s future. He has signed a five year deal and, as we all know, contracts are meaningless – however if he does leave it will be a Commercial decision and not a personal one. Although we have a multi billionaire chairman who is supportive of the club he is funding the development of the River side stand and although the cost has not been divulged due to the complex nature of the build it is bound to be substantial. Have a look at the progress here.
