We looked far more toothless through that period without Gayle like. He was our top scorer (and the league's I believe) at the time. If you're top scorer gets injured, he should always waltz back into the team on returning. Anything else would be madness surely.
Mitrovic is a far better player for me and looks much more likely to score, therefore should play. I do have reservations because he is just average himself, and has a horrific disciplinary record. Mitrovic is of course only 23 and improving. Joselu is supposedly at his peak at 27. It has been difficult to judge both players previously as both have spent a lot of time on the bench and you need a run of 5-10 games to settle and prove your worth. I think Joselu has had 9 now and he just doesn't look up to it. I'd be looking at Mitrovic between now and the New Year. The reluctance from Benitez is somewhat understandable as he let him down previously. I think we're now at that stage though where the balance has tipped on ignoring his previous indiscretion in favour of trying to help the team. In reality Mitrovic needs to get himself out of Newcastle for the sake of his career. Benitez needs him out to get the money and replace him with someone he can comfortably put his faith in. On all counts the team comes first. At present the team is best assisted by playing our best striker of a bad bunch. Long term the team is best assisted by having a player in the squad who is hopefully better and one the manager has faith in. I think you need to separate the two for now.
The pleasing thing for me with Mitrovic is he has sorted his fitness out. He looks in really good nick physically. I also like that he always looks like he desperately wants to play and do well for the club. With some of the classless acts we've had over the years I've learnt to appreciate that a bit more as a supporter. What was once a given is now more rare.
Genuine question: What's our PL win % with Mitro in the team vs Joselu? While there are lots of other factors that affect that, at the end of the day it's the only stat that matters. (I don't know the answer to this, and don't particularly have a dog in this fight other than I like Mitro but love and respect Rafa)
I'd play him for ten games and then decide.. He may just need a good run or he'll self destruct either way we'll have our answers
I have posted a link that should answer your question: https://www.google.co.uk/ What do you think we are - your bloody servants?
They rested Mitrovic for South Korea. Didn't win and the striker failed to score. All hail Alexander the Great.
