With less than a quarter of the Premier League season gone, it is still early days, but the statistics suggest Liverpool's manager is right about the club's chances of fighting for a top four place.

In the modern Champions League era, the Reds have qualified for the competition on seven occasions via the Premier League (in 2005 they qualified as Champions League winners, having finished fifth in their domestic campaign).

After nine games of this term, it is a very good sign for Liverpool that when they have previously achieved Champions League qualification, they have only boasted a better record at this stage of a season on one occasion.

That came in the 2008/09 season, when Rafael Benitez's side had amassed 23 points after nine games to sit top of the league. They would go on to finish second, racking up 86 points and losing just twice all year.

This time round, Liverpool have 20 points from nine games and are currently third. Here's how that record compares at this stage of the season with previous 'Champions League years'…

    13/14 Won: 6 Drawn: 2 Lost: 1 For: 17 Against: 8 Points: 20 Position: 3rd
    08/09 Won: 7 Drawn: 2 Lost: 0 For: 14 Against: 6 Points: 23 Position: 1st Final Position: 2nd
    07/08 Won: 5 Drawn: 4 Lost: 0 For: 16 Against: 5 Points: 19 Position: 4th Final Position: 4th
    06/07Won: 3 Drawn: 2 Lost: 4 For: 9 Against: 11 Points: 11 Position: 11th Final Position: 3rd
    05/06Won: 3 Drawn: 4 Lost: 2 For: 7 Against: 8 Points: 13 Position: 12th Final Position: 3rd
    03/04 Won: 3 Drawn: 2 Lost: 4 For: 12 Against: 10 Points: 11 Position: 11th Final Position: 4th
    01/02 Won: 6 Drawn: 1 Lost: 2 For: 17 Against: 9 Points: 19 Position: 4th Final Position: 2nd
    00/01Won: 4 Drawn: 3 Lost: 2 For: 16 Against: 13 Points: 15 Position: 5th Final Position: 3rd

And here is how Liverpool's start this season after nine games compares to their recent failed campaigns…

    13/14 Won: 6 Drawn: 2 Lost: 1 For: 17 Against: 8 Points: 20 Position: 3rd
    12/13 Won: 2 Drawn: 4 Lost: 3 For: 12 Against: 14 Points: 10 Position: 12th Final Position: 7th
    11/12 Won: 4 Drawn: 3 Lost: 2 For: 12 Against: 10 Points: 15 Position: 6th Final Position: 8th
    10/11 Won: 2 Drawn: 3 Lost: 4 For: 9 Against: 14 Points: 9 Position: 18th Final Position: 6th
    09/10Won: 5 Drawn: 0 Lost: 4 For: 22 Against: 13 Points: 15 Position: 8th Final Position: 7th

3 points out of 6. Fulham (H), Everton (A) left.

Beat Fulham and we're right back on track, I think the derby will be the toughest it's been in a very long time so anything we can take is a bonus. First things first though, we have to beat Fulham.. I'm hoping Jol will still be there this time next weekend.

  6. Exactly. We expected to drop points in this mini group and many of us believe that anything from The Emirates is a bonus.

The arsneal game must be put in context... however that context cannot be set by the past, even if it is the very recent past, i.e. this season. The arsenal game can only be put in context by our reaction to defeat.

To make the ground up we need to go win the next 2. certainly fulham look relegation strugglers, though i would back them to scrape by this year. We should have a minimum of 4 points from 6 to show some sort of reaction here. take 6 out of 6 and it puts arsenal in context as a hard away day we got tactically wrong. We cannot afford a slip up and a bad run here guys.

the only thing to do is react positively i nthe next game and right the wrongs. I have said however for so many games now that 3-5-2 is just plain wrong and it continues to be the case.

just so everyone has it, we are now below the 80 point trend line. we have to react to keep up with the jones'.. one more bad result and well find ourselves in 7th. hardly a disaster but its nice to be saying we pay no attnetion tot he table while sitting in the top group rather than looking up.

to be on for 80 points we need to win 7 of the next 9 games.

    Fulham
    Everton
    Hull
    Norwich
    West Ham
    Tottenham
    Cardiff
    Manchester City
    Chelsea

Big challenge there. i think we need to win the next 5 to put points in the bag for a very dodgy few coming then. Big ask to win those 5 with everton in there and even west ham. the rest should by any side wanting 80 points should be meat and drink... we'll see!

Get a point or three away to Everton then go in to the next 4 with 3 very winnable games. Very happy with how things are progressing under Rodgers.. Now we're back to 4-3-3 anyway :emoticon-0102-bigsm

    1 down..

Everton will be tricky and hard to predict but then 3 games which are must wins, especially with Spurs, City & Chelsea. I'd expect us to pick up a few points against those 3 bigger teams but can't see us winning many especially as all 3 are away from home.

As long as we beat the teams below us in the table then anything against the rivals around us is a bonus.

Can't see us getting 7 wins out of those 9 fixtures, would hope we certainly get 5 plus probably a couple of draws and couple of defeats.

Also worth pointing out that Arsenal have Southampton next and Spurs play City, so that helps our case a bit against Everton.

Everton will be a tough game, they're playing well. City will likely beat us as they look like they're picking up form again.
Spuds are there for the taking though and Chelski are all over the place form wise, no idea which team will show face.

WON'T UPDATE THIS .we are on 6/12 thats not good. we need a win v everton to right the mistakes v arsenal.

just cos someone else is playing someone else is no exuse for us f'ing up v everton. if we do i'll point back to this period at the end of the seaosn and say.. here look. 7/12 in block 2 and 6/12 in block 3. that killed our chances.

right now we need to beat everton and move into a tough block with form.
