Portsmouth set to appeal Callum Johnson’s controversial red card during Millwall defeat Callum Johnson received his first ever red card during Portsmouth's defeat to Millwall in the Carabao Cup, but head coach Danny Cowley is planning on appealing the decision. Portsmouth head coach Danny Cowley is planning to appeal the red card given to Callum Johnson during the Carabao Cup defeat to Milwall. Johnson was shown a straight red card early in the second half of the 2-1 loss at The Den after a sliding challenge on George Saville, a decision that not many have agreed with. After the game, Millwall boss Gary Rowett admitted that he did not think it was a red card incident, a view that Cowley agrees with. Cowley was unsure whether or not the ban would carry over into League One matches, but the Blues boss is planning on getting the decision rescinded and his reacted to the decision made by referee Charles Breakspear.
Watching the replay of Pompey's loss at the Den gave me far more confidence for the coming season than did their win on Saturday. They seemed a far more organized side - perhaps Williams was responsible for a part of the difference. Johnson was more impressive than Freeman had been on Saturday also. He was desperately unlucky to be sent off. As best I could see on television he slid in with his foot on the ground and won the ball. If that is not acceptable then any form of sliding tackle is effectively being banned. The contest between Brown and Ogilvie for the LB position appears to be likely to be a close run thing this season -as maybe the Marquis - Hirst selection decisions will be' . And clearly Reece Hackett Fairchild cannot be allowed to go out on loan any time soon! PUP
