Sports Direct boss Mike Ashley says sorry to government

Sports Direct boss Mike Ashley has apologised to the government after saying its shops should stay open during the coronavirus lockdown.

He agreed to close its high street stores earlier this week in a U-turn, having previously argued that the company provided an essential service and should stay open.

In an open letter, he said he was “deeply apologetic about the misunderstandings of the last few days”.

He added: "Our intentions were only to seek clarity from the government as to whether we should keep some of our stores open. We would never have acted against their advice.”

Mr Ashley also said that his Frasers Group would offer its entire fleet of lorries to help deliver medical equipment and supplies for the NHS and other key workforces.

but says **** all about taking money off the fans
Or hiking up prices.

"Managing director Lee Charnley emailed staff on Monday to say the decision was taken to safeguard the club's future.

Employees including the academy and foundation charity have been instructed to apply for the job retention scheme."

We are such a cheapskate company. We cut every corner and shamelessly conduct our business in a cap in hand manner. Many other clubs are reaching out to try and support communities in this difficult time. Our owner is just an unforgiveable ****. "times are tough, go ask the government for 80% of your pay as we're not covering you".

I hate everything about how our club is run. Almost to the point of me removing my support in any way. I'm currently borderline and to be honest it wont take much for me to turn my back on the club entirely. It's not funny any more, there is simply no enjoyment from NUFC and support feels too much like validating the fat man and his horrible ways.

I’m with you. I hate going to SJP now, it’s a vacuum. And the bogs are in a right ****ing state.

Other clubs are actually guaranteeing wages for all staff throughout, including even the temporary workers who just come in when a game is on.

This puts the club in an appalling light- although it was one of the main stories on BBC World News, just ahead of Jack Grealish’s apology.

more evidence of our impending sale

Yep. It's exactly what I would do as the owner of a club I wanted to sell - produce some negative press about the club. Its obviously a cunning ploy by Ashley to put the potential new owners off or drive the price down.

Or maybe you think the chairman of the Sovereign Wealth Fund said "We are only going to buy the club if you will do something that will immediately endear us to the non-playing staff and the British Public"

How should I know whether its happening. I am not itk like you are. All I am doing is interpreting the signs the club are giving and the statements the potential buyers are making. They suggest to me that this hasn't progressed very far at all. I don't think its a fakeover as I think the Saudi's would come out and bad mouth Ashley if it was.

I would tend to describe it as "close to the starting line". However if its a very short race it could feasibly be both.
