Most clean sheets last season: 1. Hart - 18 2. Reina - 14 2. Cech - 14 4. Begovic - 12 5. Mignolet - 11 5. Jaaskelainen - 11 5. De Gea - 11 8. Howard - 10 8. Szczesny - 10 10. Lloris - 9 Well that shows two things, firstly De Gea proves the utd bias. Secondly, if anyone is average it is Lloris in 10th place, right in the middle. Mignolet managed 11 while fighting for survival in the league. Reina as usual is over rated......
Lloris is a decent keeper, been the French no. 1 for a few years. But I have never really seen him pull off a spectacular performance. Think what Spurs paid for him was more for his status in the national team and big game experience. Mignolet could easily play for a CL team, which is why I'd be grateful having him.
It is interesting to study this clean sheet list, however, clean sheets are about alot more than who is between the sticks. i.e. Quality of back four from various perspectives : Aerial strength, holding lines, communication etc. Quality of midfield defensive responsibilities : Tracking back/workrate,good tackling, good shape etc. Truth is there was not a really decent defence in the prem. last season.
Not a fair comparison without mentioning games played. Mignolet and Hart for example played 38, Reina 31 and Lloris only 25.
Pepe Reina insists that he would welcome the competition from the likely arrival of Simon Mignolet at Liverpool. The Anfield club are thought to have agreed a fee in excess of £11million with Sunderland for the Belgian goalkeeper, a move that would throw Reina's future into question. The Spanish goalkeeper has been linked with a return to Barcelona, who he left to join Villarreal in 2002. However, Reina has previously signalled his intention to see out his current Liverpool contract, which has three years to run, and even extend it. Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to increase competition on his squad, something Reina is happy to accept if the Mignolet deal goes through. "It has not changed a bit. I have said it many times, I'm very comfortable and very happy at Liverpool," Reina declared at a press conference during the Confederations Cup. "Every team needs competitors, and when it's positive it is more than welcome. If it is finally done I'll welcome him a lot, and anything he needs, I'm here."
I think this is a great statement from Pepe, we need a strong team not only first team places but in squad depth as well. The pieces seem to be coming together for a decent squad. Look at United, 2 'decent' first team keepers rotated fairly and it showed the benefits
Exactly - if Reina does stay then that's a great 2 keepers to have. Because lets face it Jones is pretty ****.... Even if Reina moves on, I would want us to get a better number 2 than Jones anyway - the guy ****s the life out of me when in goal for us. He can hardly catch the ball! We need 2 quality players for each position and that includes GK's
There I was trying to have a dig at the spurs fan and you defend him. Now I shall delve further: Of those top 10 keepers, I shall list games played, clean sheets and games per clean sheet. e.g. Hart - 38 games - 18 clean sheets - 2.11 games per clean sheet (lower number or closest to 1 the better obviously) Anyway.... Hart - 38 games - 18 clean sheets - 2.11 games per clean sheet Reina - 31 games - 14 clean sheets - 2.21 games per clean sheet Cech - 36 games - 14 clean sheets - 2.57 games per clean sheet Begovic - 38 games - 12 clean sheets - 3.16 games per clean sheet Mignolet - 38 games - 11 clean sheets - 3.45 games per clean sheet Jaaskelainen - 38 games - 11 clean sheets - 3.45 games per clean sheet De Gea - 28 games - 11 clean sheets - 2.54 games per clean sheet Howard - 36 games - 10 clean sheets - 3.60 games per clean sheet Szczesny - 25 games - 10 clean sheets - 2.50 games per clean sheet Lloris - 25 games - 9 clean sheets - 2.77 games per clean sheet
If both stay though we'll either have a £10 mill second keeper or one on £120 grand a week. How much will this transfer impact on our budget to strengthen elsewhere at the back? Hopefully not at all but we all know we haven't got money to burn.
I'm not defending anyone mate just stating facts. Facts that your second lot of stats back up as the top ten is now in a different order with Lloris higher up.
I don't expect the club to go out and buy another keeper without Reina being made fully aware, including having discussions with him. So - to state the obvious - either Reina's leaving now/January or Mignolet is intended as serious competition to keep Reina on his toes bearing in mind his recent dip in form.
Clean sheets are not just down to the keeper. They are a team effort. In fact the team plays the bigger part, not the keeper.
It's not really pessimism from me mate I'd be more than happy to have both players in the squad but it doesn't make a massive amount of sense financially. If we've got £10 mill to spend on a player, is back-up keeper our priority for that amount of cash? It'd be bloody great to have the two competing (if that's the way it turns out). I'm just hoping we don't miss out on strengthening the areas we need to because a big chunk of the transfer fund has been used on a player who sits on the bench 90% of the season. I think the most likely scenario is that if we do seal a deal for Ming we will then become "open to offers" for Reina.
i hope he stays but Reina maybe sold to bring in funds for other areas we need strengthening. be nice if the owners took a risk and said right we will pay for 2 good keepers even if just for one season, we have nothing to lose because if we dont make top 4 next season most expect Reina to go to Barca anyway and we have quality cover for a change, if we get top 4 finish he may change his mind, if he doesn't well we would have Cl football to attract a decent keeper for comp for Mignolet. trouble is do we need to sell now to strengthen other areas, and who is likely we can sell to raise funds and Reina sadly would be top of the list.
Put Buffon in the Sunderland side and he will look **** when considering clean sheets! Its more to do with the team and, inparticular, the defenders than it is the keeper!
I don't particularly care about the clean sheet stat, didn't know how many Sunderland had before we were linked. All I know is that I thought Migs and Begovic were probably 2 of the best keepers last season.
Same which was kind of my point, the clean sheet stat means **** all as far as the individual is concerned I'd agree that they were the best two although I'd prefer Bergovic
