In many respects Gills did to us what we try to do to others. Contain and nick a winner, at Leicester for example.

Just read back on this. I don't pretend to know your team set up, but if you are in need of a striker/midfielder, go get Bradley Dack off Blackburn. Two players i've always recommended, one was Gazzaniga (goalkeeper) and he went to Tottenham, the other Dack, worth getting the cheque book out for if you want my opinion.

We were linked with Dack back in January last year - then we ended up with Madine........<doh>

If he's got some modicum of skill or more, he's not a Warnock type player.

I was surprised he went to Blackburn to be honest, they were in the same league as us at the time, no disrespect to Blackburn but i certainly expected him to be playing higher than L1 at the time. He easily has proven the step up to the Championship and is regarded as highly there as he was at our place. The only thing is with Dack you do have to let him have a bit of a free role. Imho he could never play alongside our top scorer at the time Cody, but i rated Dack far higher than Cody who came from Norwich back in the day. Cody just became a bit of a messiah and it p'd me off, whereas Dack was just class.

What was ironic about yesterday’s game was that for the first time this season we had the vast majority of possession with the opposition just lumping it away towards a sole forward.

But unlike our PL opponents whom have such domination [against us] City were palpably deficient in creating goal opportunities and when they did the finishing was woeful.

No wonder then Gills took the game to City once they realised City were incapable of getting a shot on target. Well done to them; hope they get a decent PL team at home next.

For City, Ralls and in particular Paterson had shockers. Ward should have started. Damour was our best player.

You are absolutely spot on. Save reinventing the wheel i've copied this from one of our posters;

Defensively playing the 5 across the back seemed to work well for us, we surrendered ground in their half but with 2 lines of 5 and 4 Cardiff found it hard to get through. When they did get through players where throwing themselves in front of every ball and restricting Cardiff to few clear cut chances (helped a little by poor finishing from "premiership" players) on the break we looked dangerous every time.

Last time they beat a top tier club in the FA Cup was in January 1964. They beat Sheffield Wednesday 3.2 at Somerton Park. I was there.

7th placed Leicester knocked out by lowly, but magnificent Newport County WTF. Makes our result easier to take maybe? Fulham knocked out by fugging Oldhamat home WTF? Makes our result appear quite good...well done NW...not! :emoticon-0103-cool:

You make me feel young. I wasn't born until the following month.

Great result for them though.
I thought the foxes would go on to win when they got it back to 1-1.
The pen came from about their first attack of the second half. The equaliser seemed to sting them into action.

I was just a babe in arms. <whistle>

The speedway track surrounded the pitch at Somerton in those days. To provide extra seating they put folding wooden chairs on the grass semi circles between the goals and the speedway track. Imagine that nowadays. [HASHTAG]#misslesareus[/HASHTAG]

My dad took me to watch the speedway at somerton park when I was a kid.
Ok for something different, but not something I got into.
 
Me neither. Never went although my uncle was a big fan and travelled the country to watch it. Friday was speedway night in Newport and the sound of bikes travelling round and round carried all across the town.

From a football perspective it created some interesting injuries as burly County full backs nudged their opposing wingers face first on to the shale track. Ouch!!!

I didn’t realise you were of that age so you must have seen some football.

I was at Somerton Park when they beat West Ham Utd in 1979. Didn’t realise they weren’t in the top tier then.

Well done the Cewnty<applause>

Hope they avoid Gillingham and the jacks

Lol. No I watched Newport from 63 to middle 80's. I used to alternate Newport and City home games from 67 to 77 unless I went away with City.

I was at that game too. Eddie Woods from Ferndale scored the first in a 2.1 win. Howard Goddard got the second. Next season Newport got promoted and won the Welsh Cup.

It will be good to watch the 4th round draw tomorrow to see who they get. I agree avoid Gillingham (nothing against them) but a south Wales derby would be a money spinner. However any of the top 6 at Rodney Parade would give them financial security for another year or so. I read somewhere that winning today's televised game netted them £200k.

I used also to pop over to Newport in late 70’s when City were away. Didn’t they kick off at 3.15 not 3?

They got quite good then under old Bushy Eyes. Vaughan, Gwyther, Aldridge, Tynan, Lowndes, Elsey, Kendall, Relish, Oakes.......,,,

but not good enough in 1982-3<whistle>
 
Yes. 3.15 for some reason. Never worked out why.

Before I could drive if I walked home the Football Argus was usually in the local newsagents by 5.45. The Echo, coming from Cardiff, was a little later.

Just shows how crap the Daily Fail is when it struggles to get our scores (not to mention a report) in the paper when we have Friday or Saturday night games.

I remember 82/83 well. The feeling in Newport was the directors felt that getting another promotion could not be financially managed and didn't give Ashurst the support he needed to get them over the line The Easter games against City and Pompey were epic though.
 
Amazing to think that the fixtures in 82/83 were the first time the clubs had met in the league since 1938. BfB was at that one too :emoticon-0143-smirk
