My middle name has been a constant source of amusement to my friends all my life. If I hadn't been given it because it was my Dad's first name, I would probably have stopped using it by now, but in a strange way I have become proud of it. Those of you of my vintage will remember the song made famous by Tottenham fans which I had to endure at school... "Nice one, Cyril".
I have little affection or regard for my father (racist sexist sod) but remain indebted to him for insisting on "normal" names for me which would not cause too much ridicule. Stephen Anthony does me fine. Some parents are just so selfish when naming children. Middle names can be ignored most of the time but first names should always be given with care. While working in a psychiatric hospital once I was introduced to the new staff nurse, Nurse Comfort. After calling that around the ward a few times I'm afraid to say I resorted to oi you.
Don't get me started about modern parents giving kids stupid names (especially those with hyphens). They seem to believe their little darling will always be a cute two-year-old called Mollie-May or Mitsy-Moo or whatever. I have a simple suggestion: If the name isn't suitable for a Prime Minister or a doctor, don't use it...you have no idea what your child will be and I even suggest ditsy names produced ditsy people.
My father was the gentlest, kindest and most caring man you could meet and I am so proud to be his son. The saddest thing was that he died when I was only 27 years old. As for middle names I am named Charles after my grandfather another man who died young (before I was born). It is amazing that I have lived so long and I attribute that to inheriting my maternal line's tendency for longevity. Which reinforces my opinion that the good die young. My mother was pure poison.
Its interesting how you can generally tell peoples age group by there christian/middle names? People of my generation were usually named after their Father or Grandfather, hence my middle names of Fredrick James. We then had the Jason and Kylies of the 90's now it seem we are entering the Pixie BoBo, Billy Bluebell, Zac Moonshine phase, what next I wonder?
Not saying that it is right, but people can be classified by names...could make all the difference when a prospective employer is doing an initial sift through hundreds of applications. The name Kylie (for example) has an image..like it or not.
Yes, you only have to look at FLT's avatar to know what image most men see in their minds when they hear that name!
I'm sorry to hear that man. My ex girlfriend struggled as well with her mother and her manipulative ways. Its hard when something that should come as-standard simply doesn't materialise. Edit: Back on topic. No middle name in any of my family...just Tom (I was named after my dad took a delight to Tom & Jerry Cartoons and thought it would be neat if i was named after the ever bungling, occasionally fascist cat.)
