I liked these bits:

Not a fan of AC/DC but like Brian Johnson when I’ve seen him doing programmes on TV. Was reading something the paper by Simon Weston about his treasured possessions. One of the most was this one. When he was in hospital with his terrible burns his dad bought him an AC/DC album and he spent a lot of time listening to it as he was a big fan. He told this story to Johnson’s ex wife at a charity do and she said next time she spoke to him she would mention their conversation. Shortly after a parcel arrived at his house from America. Inside was a letter from Brian Johnson and a signed platinum album they had been presented with for the album he liked.
Like Brian Johnson even more now.

Mick Ronson, Trev Boulder & Woody had the quality to have been the backbone of ANY rock band - I'm sure Bowie had the talent to get there but, The Spiders From Mars certainly made it easier for him.

We used to go Sunday evening to watch him play in the Rats upstairs at the Duke of Cumberland in Ferriby. It was always packed out.

Fond memories of the Duke of Cumberland. Worked in the lounge bar on Sat nights & upstairs Sunday nights from late '63 to mid '65. Live bands must have started later as it was DJ & juke-box music in a packed room on Sunday nights. Tips were excellent in those days. Had to be, otherwise they'd never get served !
Was last in there about 15 years ago - had changed a lot, but still decent venue for a bevvy (or two). Do they still put on live gigs anyone ?

They do still have live music, but nothing like it’s sounds it used to have in its heyday.
The upstairs is a function room for hire I think

Think Bowie realised the Spiders were too limited to do what he wanted to do. (Look what stuff he did from 73 to 78 - Golden Years,Station to Station to Heroes etc)

Coukd have handled it better but he was all chinged up a lot of the time and up his own arse.

Mick Ronson was the only musician Bowie played with who shared the mic as an equal

Spot on summation - unlike Bowie, the Spiders were first and foremost a rock/blues orientated band; no matter how hard I try I can't really imagine the bass line of Bolder and Woodmansey in any of DB's later stuff.
