Haha! Rooney hasnt played out and out striker for England for most of his appearances you plank! Your stats just back up your my point. Everyone bums messi and says how **** England are compared to Argie bargie - yet rooney has scored more goals than Messi at International level.

    ROONEY! ROONEY! ROONEY!

It makes me laugh how evryone slates rooney and says he isnt world class yet his goal to game ratio for England is as good as Messi's and he has scored over 150 goals for Utd. It also makes me laugh at all the Arsenal fans saying Rooney isnt very good, bet you werent saying that when he put three past you at the weekend, absolutely battering your pathetic excuse of a club in the process. Hahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaa

Two of the best freekicks you'll ever see and if his one that hit the post had gone in it would have been goal of the season. It was incredible. Plus his overhead kick against City was better than anything Messi has ever done. FACT!

ROONEY! ROONEY! ROONEY! COME ON ENGLAND LETS GET THE 3 POINTS

OP is correct to some extent. Messi is a fantastic player, but barcelona win because of iniesta, xavi and busquets. They keep possesion so well. And thats why they win. Messi gets so many opporuntities vs tired opposition. Having said that, messi is a great player. But if I had to pick a team to play for my life tomorrow, then first name on the team sheet would be xavi, not messi.

O, and if you think barca win due to messi then please refer to spain. They win everything at international level (basically every game) because they have the same midfeild as barca. Messi is the icing on the cake, and is a great player. But lets not ignore the fact that the barca midfield 3 is why they win.

Is this guy for real?? It's clear you are a closet Man Utd fan for the fact you would compare Utd's 99 team (1 Euro Trophy) to this Barca team (3 )

International is the highest level because it is the purest form of the game. It strips out all the money and all that is left is talent. Zidane and maradonna just ran out on a football pitch and dominated because they were the greatest. Messi needs a strong tactical midfeild behind him, and a monopoly of possesion to be succesful.

I had a good laugh at the world cup when messi had a shocker, missed about 10 clear cut chances and the media all loved him. Like seriously, if any arsenal player missed 10 glorious opportunities then he would be lambasted by sherear, hansen and the rest of them.

You keep saying Messi hasn't done anything and is 'gash' at international level yet his strike-rate is the same as Rooney, who you seem to see as a messiah. I've never said Rooney is crap, he is undoubtedly world class but he doesn't do much at international level either. Infact, alot of those goals are against minnows in group stages. Messi has to play against Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay etc in qualifying, alot harder than Azerbaijan and Switzerland! But Ronaldo and Messi are a step above Rooney, in most people's opinion.

You clearly have an agenda though and you're not gonna change it.

But the best playmakers make those around them better players. The best player on the team isnt a messi/ronaldo character who dribbles, runs fast and scores. They are dependent on the playmaker. Having vision and passing skill is the hardest thing in football. Heck, look at france from the 2002 world cup (when zidane was injured) to when they werent going to qualify for the 2006 world cup till zidane returned. All the other french players looked awful. Even the great henry was a shambles for france.

In football, to be a playermaker is so difficult. These guys win games. Sure ronaldo, messi and even goal scorers like linekar can take the credit and some fans will think they are the best. But in reality these players are dependent on the playmakers to succeed

Using strike rate at international level is borderline ******ed. Alot of games are friendlies or against terrible sides making international caps/goal scoring records pointless. Thierry henry scored alot of goals for france but he was never good for them.

Messi can only perform when he has talent around him.

Not the sign of a world class player.

Which is why I then said about the level of competition. Go and have a look at the teams that Rooney has scored against - Macedonia, Kazakhstan, Andorra, Slovakia. When was the last time Rooney scored against a quality international team and played an absolute blinder? Most of these goals are at home, aswell. Compare that to Messi who has scored against Brazil, Portugal and Spain in friendlies. He has scored in a World cup too.

Anyway, I'm not sure why I've been dragged into this debate. I don't have a problem with Rooney atall, I just think that we vastly over-rate him.
