I was concerned to hear Bowyer say regarding Taylor that '.......l am just pleased that we have him until January' That suggests that he has already resigned himself to the fact that there is no way of retaining him beyond that date. I agree that no one player is bigger than the club, but in Taylors' case they should make an exception. Everyone knows how important he is to the team, and to the club in general; and because of that Bowyer should speak to RD and ask him, on this one occasion, to make Taylor an offer that he would have to seriously consider from a financial position, especially if the team are in a good position in the league, it could be the difference between success and failure this season. What is the point of the squad trying really hard to put the club in a good position in January, only to see it fall away for the sake of some additional funds being made available. In all the time the owner has been in charge, he has not really spent what might be described as 'significant sums' and it would be a terrible waste of all the hard work everyone has put in to the team, only to see it go to waste, especially if there is even the remotest chance of moving to the next level. So, Bowyer, everyone is behind you and the squad, it is time for you to achieve ultimate legend status; have a word with the owner sooner rather than later to ensure that Lyle stays with us until at least the end of the season, please.
Don't disagree with anything, but Bowyer is just being honest, which is one of his greatest strengths.
...who has introduced a culture of lies and deceit to the club. Apart from Jim White everyone knows it too.
As I see it (and I do not necessarily agree with this) is that the Owner feels that Bow can keep Charlton in the Championship with his existing player budget …. which seems to be reinforced by Bow time and again in his press statements. If you give Taylor a mega deal then everybody else will be knocking on Bow's door (or rather their Agents will) asking for a deal similar to Taylor's 100% to 200% increase... you would end up with the overall wage budget going up by 50 to 100% and the Owner would never agree to that.
I also suspect that the owner is hoping that Bowyer &co can get Charlton into the Premier league, which is why he's fobbing off potential buyers.
OK, Huddersfield got into the Premiership with the second lowest budget in the Championship but we have a League 1 playing budget and not even a top L1 budget … the Premiership is out of reach. The owner may feel that if we can keep hold of Taylor until mid January then we may have enough points to give us a shot at Championship safety in the absence of Taylor …. if Lyle has 10 to 15 goals by January then a £4m (plus add ons) buying price to a team aiming for the Prem may seem a steal.
Bowyer is saying that even if we give Taylor what Brentford gave him there is no guarantee that he will stay.
I feel sorry for Taylor, if the figures of 25K(or near) are to be believed, it must be very frustrating to be in his position.
