Mertesacker - to be sold?

  1. That's a bit harsh - he didn't say they were crap.

    What a stupid argument.

Stats mean absolutely nothing. Grant Holt has scored more goals than Suarez this season, are you going to tell me Holt is better than Suarez?

Koscielny's positioning is far from woeful, I don't know where you got that from.

And Vermaelen may be a good leader but that's no good if he keeps making stupid mistakes every 3 or 4 games. He's too error prone atm, similar to Luiz.

Koscielny is better than Vermaelen is every single department bar leadership skills. Mertesacker is also better than him in most departments. The goals he scores are a bonus, his defensive qualities should not be judged based on how many goals he scores. His job is to defend.

Hummels is an unrealistic target, he's one of the best centre backs in Europe and would cost well over 20M. Vertonghen is better than Vermaelen and probably Mertesacker as well, but he's not as good as Koscielny.

Koscielny is comfortably our best centre back, this is not even up for debate.

Come on, Vermaelen isn't in the same class as Luis when it comes to mistakes, that's just nuts.

I don't know how you can be so sure about Vertonghen. He has never played in the EPL, he may turn out to be completely useless, or he may turn out to be great, but it is far from certain either way. He has also only really had one good year. How do you know it isn't the other CB who is playing so well, or the DM or the back 4 as a unit? How is he going to fit into our defensive system? I he going to man mark or is he going to sweep? If he is a direct replacement for Vermaelen, he and Metersacker would make a lousy pairing.

There is a lot more going on back there than you can sum up by, this player is better than that player. I would say, given the difference in what Vermaelen and Koscielney do for us at the back, it is virtually impossible to compare them at the moment.

And also, I've yet to see Koscielny leather a football the same way as Vermaelen! Fookin' love it when he takes free kicks so that's something else he does better! I love both players and think they make a superb partnership. Having Mert as a backup is superb and even Djourou as a 4th backup is better than almost any other club in the league have.

No "almost" about it. Those 4 CBs are way ahead of any other team.

Yeah, he doesn't make as many mistakes as Luiz, but they're quite similar in the sense that they're both great going forward, but can be suspect defensively at times.

Vertonghen is a player I've watched quite a few times, he's been great, albeit in a very average league. I've also watched him play for Belgium and he's been equally impressive. I just think he's well suited to this league. He's big, good in the air, good on the ball and he's a good tackler.
