Vermaelen can do no wrong, right?

Koscielny has been our best defender by a mile this season. Yet Vermaelen is still judged by his first 6 months for us, and Koscielny in almost every thread is mentioned as a sub to a potential Verm + Vertonghen* pairing.

* or whatever the fad is at that moment

 

No he's not.

Koscielny is our best centre back, followed by Mertesacker and then Vermaelen.

Vertonghen is very much like a bigger and stronger version of Vermaelen. He's not as good as Koscielny or Mertesacker.

 

I'm sick to death of people judging Vermaelen's defensive abilities based on the amount of goals he scores. I love the guy to bits, but he's an overrated defender. He makes too many mistakes to be a top centre back.

Koscielny is our best centre back by a country mile. Anyone who can't see that doesn't understand football.

Mertesacker is also a better defender than Vermaelen.

 

Wow, and I'm sick of people judging Vermaelen on his last 5 or 6 games. He's in poor form but before that he was probably the best defender in the league, and will be again after this blip. I don't care that he's scored lots of goals either.

 

I think CBs should be judged as a partnership. It's too much of a team game.

I'm not judging him based on the last 5 or 6 games. He always makes silly makes. He's never been the best defender in the league, stop talking out of your arse.

 

When were these mistakes? I've seen him own every forward in the league, easily. If Kosh is playing so well, explain why Sczezny had to cover his ass against Man City when he lost the forward? Explain the Carling Cup final debacle. IMO Kosh is good, but he's the one being over-rated by people at this time.

 

Vermaelen is probably the weakest of our 3 good CB's. He is still prone to rushing into tackles he can't win, and leaving space behind. His positional play is a bit suspect too, but nonetheless a superb athlete and because of his pace, can get himself out of trouble. If he calms down - and learns from Merts how to read the game he will be world class.
