This day in 1974.

Was at this match and was in the Gallowgate Corner along with some of the Forest fans. Great game to be at and fantastic atmosphere and wonderful comeback. My simplistic view was it was just a few kids running on the pitch. Not the absolute mayhem resembling Beirut which the FA and the Forest tried to make it out to be.

Anyone else want to post a memorable game for them.

1974 Nottingham Forest (h) 4-3
(1-2)
FA Cup 6th Round Craig(25),
McDermott(78pen), Tudor(81), Moncur(90),
Bowyer(2), O'Kane(43),
Lyall(59pen)
54,500

"And here they come, this is what the Newcastle fans wanted...."
In commentator speak, the words of Hugh Johns aren't far away from being our "some people are on the pitch" sound bite.
The facts: Future mackem Ian Bowyer put the Second Division visitors ahead within 82 seconds. David Craig levelled but Forest led at half time thanks to Liam O'Kane.

Referee Kew then sparked unrest in the crowd when awarding a penalty at the Gallowgate End on 59 minutes, Pat Howard being sent off for pushing the official before George Lyall made it 3-1 from the spot.

That was the signal for angry Newcastle fans to burst out of the Leazes and invade the pitch, causing the game to be halted and the teams to leave the field.

It's alleged that Martin O'Neill was one of a couple of Forest players who took sly whacks as they scarpered - although he denied this when asked about it many years later.

Offered the chance of an abandonment, Forest players, Directors and manager Allan Brown were happy to play on and the tie restarted.

What follows is part of Magpies folklore.

1-3 became 2-3 on 78 minutes when McDermott converted a penalty. A crowd who scented blood roared United on and John Tudor levelled the tie with a fine diving header with nine minutes remaining.

With fans in an advanced stage of delirium, somehow Bobby Moncur hooked home a last minute effort to win the game - until Forest protested to the FA and the Lancaster Gate killjoys annulled the result the following week.

The tie was restaged at the neutral venue of Goodison Park on March 18th but ended scoreless, with Newcastle winning the replay at the same venue 1-0 on March 21st thanks to Supermac's goal.

As part of our punishment we were barred from playing FA Cup home games the following season.

In retrospect the most remarkable thing about the pitch invasion is how the Leazes enders managed to get across the clarty pitch in their sta-press trews and chelsea boots - speeding up as they reached the other end and diving headlong into the Forest fans. The ringleader got a six month stretch.

Some years later John Tudor recounted the game as follows:

"We would never have won the game if the fans hadn't run on and the referee taken us to the dressing-room. We were 3-1 down and 10 men against 11. But, worse, we couldn't play because Bob Chapman and David Serella had a stranglehold on midfield.

"Mal and I hadn't had a kick but that was because there was no service. Terry Hibbitt, normally our top provider, was having a stinker. The Forest pair closed ground so quickly there was no space in which to work.

"In the tunnel there were whoops of delight from the Forest players. They thought they had won.

"In comparison, you could hear a pin drop in our dressing-room - until Joe Harvey burst in and demanded to know what we were going to do about it. We decided to gamble and push forward. There was nothing to lose.

"Forest let their concentration slip, they thought the job was already done, and they let us go a bit in midfield after the restart.

"Hibby struck a hard, low cross from the left and I dived full-length parallel to the ground and only a couple of feet off it to bullet a header home for the equaliser.

"Then in the final minute I crossed the ball, Mal headed it down, and who was there to score but Bob Moncur of all people. It was 4-3."

Spurs away...4.1...win.
Barcelona home
Obrien free kick away to the mackems

The 2-0 home win v Liverpool the season we finished 5th was one of the most enjoyable games I've been to.

Everything about it: beating Kenny, Carroll missing the open goal, Enrique having to go in goal to 50,000 geordies letting him know we were indeed in the top 6, and of course the multitude of racist-related chants to Suarez.

Everything that could have went wrong for them that day, went wrong, and I loved it!

4-0 vs Ferencvaros was good just for Tino's double and Ginola's stunner. 4-3 vs Leicester, Shearers hatty. I still maintain 4-2 against Sheff Wed is one of the best games I've ever been to. I don't think that atmosphere in the paddocks has ever been matched for me. Monday night, stotting down, local lads Waddle and Sinton in the other team, Waddle was majestic, Sinton got 2, Cole scored obviously (2), Allen (massively underrated) fantastic capping it off and setting up Mathie scoring a stunner.
