I've got a Meriva 1.8. Not much of a car but it goes. It is thirsty though and the Road Tax man loves it!! Can anybody tell me why autos cost more to tax?
They don't need to change gears at higher revs, you can determine this by easing the throttle for gearchanges. But automatics do require more power to run as they have clutches that engage the gears. These clutches, unlike the spring-clamped clutches in a manual car, are powered hydraulically from the automatic transmission's oil pump. There are other compromises within an automatic that make them less economical to use. Sauce - wiki answers. Edit, think i got the wrong end of the stick there.
For a smooth drive around town, it's tempting to opt for an automatic or a car with continuously variable transmission (CVT). These cars are easier to drive as they have no clutch, and they change gear for you. The flip side is these cars use more fuel. Automatics use 10% to 15% more than manuals. Cars with CVT use 5% to 7% more. On motorways, fuel consumption evens out so there's not much difference between manuals and automatics. Modern semi-automatic features such as button-operated gear change and automatic clutch control help you use less fuel So they tax you ,more because they use more fuel which in turn is bad for the enviromenet (allegedly) But basically it means they are robbing bastards and drivers are easy targets
Mine has the most pointless gimmick known to man. That stop start technology. Don't know about across the water but I'm never at traffic lights long enough to make it worth while; probably more petrol used starting her up after 30 secs than sitting there!
Not quite but not far off...I know when I was moaning about paying 300 for four new ones on mine he just laughed
Methinks saint is telling porkies for 2 reasons: 1. There's nowhere to hitch it outside Anfield 2 Some bugger would have it down the halal butchers before he'd got through the turnstile!
Leave him in the park, and with a face like that- how could you hurt him? Cheap to run, no expensive tyres and you don't have to put gas in. He makes his own.
