It is Central Government that dicates how capital monies can be spent. It always has been thus the reason Labour 'reinvested' the money from the sale of 49% of the then Council owned Kingston Communications in capital projects such as the ã43.5m KC Stadium, wholesale refurbishment of Council housing stock (ã92m) etc. Agree that a lot of the old labour stalwarts are eggchasers and to see Hull FC rattling around in an even bigger stadium whilst their better healed football cousins court PL footie again, doesn't sit that easily with them. Thus their resistance to selling the so called family silver. That said the Council is run these days by the Lib Dems (Tories by another name as far as spending money is concerned) and I would've thought Minns and his merry men would look more positively at selling so long as they don't lose face politically. Needs heads banging together but the Allams have certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons.
I thought that, but then it occurred to me that Melton is not Hull City Council territory, I think it's Beverley Borough Council who would be responsible for agreeing planning on a Melton site.
Beverley Borough Council doesn't exist anymore - it disappeared with the demise of Humberside CC in 1996. Planning permission for a stadium sited in Melton would obviously come under the auspices of East Riding Council. Certainly nowt to do with Hull CC.
Seems to me that the Allams are just playing politics with the council and are trying to get the upper hand. I'd compare the situation to communism, nice idea on paper but not a cat in hell's chance of it happening (and it could be dangerous). I'd rather make sure they invest their money into the financial stability of the club for the time being then maybe in time think about moving ahead.
They already have done, and they are continuing to do, that's why they are buying the stadium so we have assets. Say for example we go up again, get bought out by another consortium like Bartletts with a Duff in charge, run up a huge debt and come back down. This time there's no generous Egyptians waiting to bail us out, we hit administration, but we have no assets = liquidation, bye bye our football club. I mean we don't need to get hold of the stadium asap, but it's something that needs doing sooner rather than later. A football club needs valuable assets to be as financially secure as possible. You need something to fall back on if the **** hits the fan, and in a risky results-based industry and the money being spent at the higher levels nowadays, it becomes increasingly likely. If we can afford to do these things they're one of the best things we can do. I think they should also be looking at buying housing under the clubs name to rent and bring in extra profits, side businesses parented by the club etc. but I'm sure that's already in their plans to get city being self funding as they say they want it to be.
Where ever we end up doing it I hope we take a lead from the Brazilians and install a swimming lane at the front of the upper tier: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-12634475
I think he's going for the triple bluff being Allam intends to move to Melton anyway and make it look like he had no choice then the council sell the stadium so he can't and we get a bigger KC.
My stepdad works for the council and would be involved in the sale of the Kc. According to him, the Allams have enquired into buying the stadium but as of yet, have not made any formal offers. I reckon that the article in the mail would be the Allams showing that they're willing to move out of the stadium if the council do not sell the stadium smoothly
I can not see moving to a stadium out at Melton would be a good idea for anyone, not the club, not the fans, not Hull. In fact the only plus side to it would be perhaps we would get a carpark that doesn't take a week to get out of.
I think the move to Melton would be a brilliant idea, I'm all for it. It would save me maybe 30 minutes on the trip to and from matches.
I think the council should sell the KC to the Allams, whose motives I don't think can be questioned. Yes they want to make their money but only in a way that benefits the city. I particularly like the sound of an Olympic sized swimming pool. Am I right in thinking there are only a few of these in the country? That would be great for Hull and beyond. Obviously it's not as simple as all that. As has been pointed out, the council's hands are tied over how they can spend the money from any sale. Even if they are keen to sell (which no one seems sure about) they would have to come up with a solid plan for reinvesting the money elsewhere. Given how much red tape there is to battle through in local government I worry that could take a long time.
I think turning the surrounding area into a sports village, with the KC as the 'main attraction', is a great idea. But to suggest that we might move to Melton is ridiculous. It's further from Hull than Beverley, and it's bad enough travelling between those two places. I live in Beverley, so I've never really been affected by the ****ty tricks Hull City Council like to pull BUT, as somebody who's team plays in a stadium owned by them, I think they're a bunch of twats.
Leeds, Sheffield and Sunderland are the only three currently in England, but there are three currently in work in Plymouth, Birmingham and London(for the Olympics obviously).
Instead of struggling to get off Walton Street car park at the KC it will take an age to get onto the A63 at Melton. It is increasingly acknowledged that the future of new stadia is in the built up area where people can get there by a number of forms of transport (car, rail, foot, park & ride etc) and not be over reliant on the motor car. I wouldn't think for a minute Manure would consider leaving OT, whilst whatever Liverpool decide to do they will still have a stadium in and around Stanley Park.
Leicester has an olympic swimming pool, not long been built either maybe 5 or 6 years max.. I drive past it most days..
actually I don't think it is, I know when they were building it they were saying it was going to be an olympic pool, but it's not in any of the lists.. the pool is 50m though I'm sure of that it's huge
According to wiki, the largest swimming pool in the Leicester area is at Loughborough University and it's not an Olympic sized pool?
For a number of reasons - 1 being that if HCC did sell to the Allam's and they built the Sports Village on Walton St car park, meaning one of Hull's oldest traditions in Hull fair can no longer go ahead - many people would complain and it wouldn't be the Allam's who get the stick it would be Minns and co for 'selling off the silver' etc... That's just one of the reasons they're having to 'think' about it - but I've been told that HCC will only sell on their terms and that means it will only be sold if it benefits everyone i.e. clauses were Allam's allow FC to stay and Hull Fair has to stay, West Park can't be encroached onto etc...
