Changing the subject slightly, does anyone agree that this would be a good time to change the National Anthem? I won't sing God Save the King, but would happily join in with Land of Hope and Glory or Jerusalem.
Your fall-back position when you're losing an argument or find it impossible to form one, Watford, is to call people Gammon. You spread the word about to be provocative. You stamp WUM on your forehead and then you don't need to argue cojently, because you can alway rely on abuse. It's not impressive
You seem to lack the intelligence to string an argument together. Why don't you put your case for why Harry and Meghan are wonderful and misunderstood, instead of resorting to abuse?
I understand your sentiment Didley, as you say anyone else and nothing would be said. They may be media junkies - but if people who know it and then attack, write about them and criticize them - aren’t those people all a part of the circus (and potentially being there own media whores for doing so - and using them to create a living?). To be on them through a grieving process seems tantamount to bullying to me. I’m not a big fan of them, I also don’t mind what they do or say particularly. It’s their choice to live their life in their own way. Chasing them down and criticising them for holding hands seems cruel at this time.
Bit soft to call that abuse. I don’t think they’re wonderful. As I’ve said before, I don’t get what they’ve done to deserve the vitriol they get from predominantly 50+ right wing males when there’s an actual nonce in the family. He’s had a bizarre but privileged life, knocked a couple of kids out and understandably gone off to the US to get away from our weird as **** right wing press. Her only crime seems to be marrying him. The reaction to them daring to hold hands is just plain odd.
My six pennies worth, SW - I agree it's not a good time to attack them now, and hope the newspapers lay off. You won't stop Twitter because it's simply continuity, the critics and supporters have been at each other's throats for years. I would love it if the pair returned to the US, and lived and enjoyed the life they have chosen. But it won't be like that. They get money from attacking the Royal Family. The more outrageous the claims that Meghan thinks up, the more attention and the more money. Harry's tell-all will earn them millions from interviews etc. Harry's thick but to be fair, is protective of his wife. Meghan is a bully and a schemer and uses all her acting skills (like all that fake suicide stuff) to get Harry wound up. All this stuff with the Cambridges and Harry and Meghan together is a cease-fire. It'll start again when they return to America, with the publication of Harry's book if not before. It damages the reputation of this country but that's not Meghan's lookout.
Same reason I wouldn't sing God Save the Queen. I don't believe in God and I don't think the Monarch should be 'saved' above others.
Contrary to Strolls, I believe in the monarchy, and am agnostic as to God, so I'll sing God Save the King I think, but I just feel it's a throw back to the forelock tugging days and a bit servile. I'm a supporter of Charles, but to be honest, the way he's lived his life at times has been anything but gracious. So, country before monarch for me.
I don't believe in a religious God, but I don't really think about the words in their literal form. I just sing it either to support the Monarchy or as a show of patriotism towards my Country.
I have done and will do, too. Queen Elizabeth's death will be a watershed in a number of ways. Some countries linked to the Crown will move towards independence referendums. Charles will actively slim down the monarchy. If the monarchy does not move forward and adapt broadly to the people's wishes, it's dead. So from a monarchy point of view, it would be worth taking soundings generally and in relation to the national anthem. I think we'll see a gradual move away from the idea of deifying the ruling king or queen.
