I agree with all of that apart from the sacking Maitlis bit. We're all part of the problem, including when it comes to the media. They only produce the content that gets views or clicks from us. The problem is that nobody ever admits when they are wrong anymore, and nobody gives people the space to be wrong anymore.
This has been an unprecedented situation that nobody was prepared for. Mistakes will be made and have been made - some of them ig ones. That would have happened whoever was in charge. We need a society where we can recognise the bigger picture and allow people to learn from those mistakes without being crucified for them. Politicians and the media are both to blame for creating this situation no matter which side of the divide they are on. It's probably reflective of larger society where we are all less tolerant of mistakes in all aspects of life. Politicians don't answer awkward questions and hides mistakes so the media gets an obsessive blood lust to expose them. The media's rabid bloodlust encourages politicians not to answer questions and hide mistakes. Genuine journalism gets lost amidst the propoganda and clickbait, and then lumped in with the rest of it as fake news when we don't agree with it. It's all ****ed up and the whole situation is bad for our country and society.
No country in the world has had the perfect response to this. Based on stats our country's response has been far from perfect, but for the most part it has been a genuine attempt to deal with a difficult situation. Every sensible world leader should admit that they could have done better with hindsight. Every wise one will mean it and recognise the mistakes to learn from them.
