But it's not good business. Pissing it away in court and on loss making start ups is far better business.
And I bet even if they are a selling club it's only because they are far down the league ladder and only sell when an offer is too good to turn down. We sell at every opportunity, even when we don't have to. We sell to get rid of "greedy" players like McCormack. How dare he ask for a decent wage after being our best player all season! The cheek of it.
Also, unless we've struck a deal to sign Rhodes if Hudds don't go up, I don't see who we can realistically get in who would be a better option than Ross.
Answer is nobody, but the "club" don't see it like that. "we'll get someone better for cheaper" is the fantasy world they live in.
We've heard the whole "if X were reinvested", "if we could get a good replacement", "snap their hands off" thing so many times, and it's disappointingly backfired so many times, that it's time for us to just dig our heels in and say we need to keep our best players at all costs. Even in the implausible situation that we did get a good replacement and reinvest, there'd still be more problems caused than solved, becuase there'd be even less consistency in the teamsheet and another body that needs settling into the rhythm. We need lots of signings before pre-season, we need the team to gel and we need Warnock to instil the fighting spirit. That's never going to happen, but still, it's what needs to if we're to stand a chance of a top half finish next season.
When Johnson and Kilkenny left after being labelled greedy by Bates, many thought it would be simple to find 2 better midfielders. We were lucky that Kilkenny was replaced internally by Clayton, although it was a big ask for him in his 1st full season at this level which showed by a lack of consistency. Johnson's replacement was probably Brown. You don't replace a young talented player with Brown. By all means add Brown's fight and experience to last 2011's young midfield, but don't replace. We are still waiting for Howson and Gradel's replacements and that money probably isn't even available anymore. We have been a selling club for far too long now, and it just signals that Leeds United is a place for players to avoid if they have any ambitions of playing in the Premier League, making attracting quality signings even harder.
Crewe are a fantastically well run club. Naturally they have to sell players to survive - they don't get anywhere near the crowds that championship clubs do - so in order to finance new signings or improvements etc they have to sell their players. It's taking them a while to get back, but using the youth team is working great for them, and as they move up the football league they'll gain (slightly) bigger crowds, be able to sign new players and attract more players to their youth teams. And yes, they probably would still sell the occasional young star - but unless they're a top 6 premier league side, this will always be inevitable.
Just a small point guys. Even if we did get £2.5m for Rosco, we wouldn't have £2.5m to spend in wages/signings. Remember, most clubs pay in installments, often over as much as five years. So that's us stymied straight away! Then there's the makeup of the £2.5. Does this figure represent the players signing on fee, exit loyalty payments, image rights, agents cut (often buying & selling agents), VAT etc? I don't know exactly what constitutes a 'fee' such as £2.5. Anyone else got an idea? Anyone know how much of the £2.5m could be the NW's to spend (if we did get it all up front & bates actually freed up the cash)? I just think we might be deluding ourselves about what £2.5m might actually mean to us, spending-wise.
I think we are deluding ourselves that a) we would ever know the amounts b) McCormack would be bought for £2.5m c) more than 10% is spent from a transfer in a direct replacement
Have to agree, I don't think McCormack is worth £2.5m. Not with one year left on his contract and negotiations set to fail.

And some of our supporters slag him off. He truly wants to stay, apparently has agreed a wage with Warnock, and only one thing stands in his way: Bates
Yep that is correct. And this wage agreed is 'well below 10k a week'. Not 15k or anything like that in other rumours
That's a very old rumour. And Ward isn't confirmed as not coming to us, we've just let other clubs into the race by not coming up with the transfer fee. EDIT: If we can't pay £400k for Ward, why would we pay £1.75 for him and Halford?
So basically we won't get either of them Surely we wouldn't go for both of them anyway, they're both right backs are they not? Probably totally wrong now...
