Folks ive been following this Caulkin fella on twitter for the last couple of weeks and he does appear to be well informed it would seem. But what has frightened the life out of me was a suggestion that was made on his account and here it is........By all accounts McCartney (yes folks thats right McCartney) is allegedly the highest earner at Sunderland, now I know it might seem daft but can anyone confirm or deny this...but bloody interesting to know

i read that a few years back ricco was earning 2.25m and gordon 2m. but can't confirm this

Didn't he have a falling out with the Leeds gaffer or chairman towards the end of last season? Sure I read something about it, claimed McCartney hadn't been pulling his weight and had no reason to claim he was feeling tired after a hard season.

Wonder if he's burnt the Leeds bridge? If so, who can we offload him to now? :emoticon-0112-wonde

we can all blame Keane for the wages some of the deadwood are on, and drumaville for backing him, not that i'd turn the clock back like, as we'd probably still be in the championship or worse, if not for the takeover

Got to say I agree, Keanes tenure has left some truly uninspiring players on ridiculous wages.

I can understand Short wanting to reduce the wage bill with players like McCartney earning top dollar.

So Im not sure if the claims that we are in financial trouble are true, more that we are simply restructuring a wage system that currently makes very little sense.

What he said, if we're struggling to bring in quality players cos we're paying ridiculous money to players, who to be quite frank are not even championship quality then it needs rectifying asap.

If no-one wants these players, why can't we send them off to Hartlepool (if they want them).

Do our neighbours a favour and keep them fit, and pray someone see's them on a good day

Good idea that might as well make the buggers work for their money. They can think if it like Medicine sans frontiers for football!

Keane was stupid but not that stupid. Anton, Gordan and Gyan are on more and Cattermole too I believe.

That's only based upon speculation though. Couldn't say for sure.

I could see this being true.

Remember when we re-signed Ringo, he didn't wanna leave West Ham, and they didn't really wanna sell, so we paid frankly pathetic money on the transfer, it's not beyond belief that Keano threw money at it.

He must be nearing the end of his contract, i concur, send him to Hartlepool.

Just googled the story when he re-signed and the Telegraph reported he signed on a 5-year deal in September 08. So he's still got 2 years left!

The wage thing wouldn't surprise me and might explain why no clubs have really come in for him. But I don't understand footballers after about the age of 26 who are happy not to be playing every week! Take a pay cut, go to the Championship, do what you love, week-in week-out.

Bates made him a bit of a scapegoat after comments that the team were 'out on their feet' towards the end of the season (which, in fairness, was true). Apparently he also missed training a couple of times and had to be fined. And was generally awful every game we played him. I seriously doubt any other club will want to take him on after how he performed (or didn't perform) at Leeds last season. At least not on anywhere near the wages he earns now.

I don't think I've ever seen a more miserable footballer that looked so sick of life as when he had his second spell with us. It was like he was asleep on his feet for half the games.

I heard from a few sites/papers (so may be all crap) but Gyan is highest on £70,000 a week but then we have the likes of Anton £60,000 and McCartney on £40,000 :S
