There's having an ego, and then there's Floyd Mayweather. I think the only thing he will be remembered for in terms of being the greatest is having the greatest ego. Although a lot do, not all boxers have big egos. Paquiao for example is fairly humble, and respectful to opponents.
Some of the greatest boxers of all time have egos the size of London. Ali, Hagler, Hearns and many more besides. Show me a boxer without an Ego and i'll show you a **** boxer.

As a way of getting an edge over an opponent in a fight is by getting into their head before the fight. But Mayweather has set himself up for complete public humiliation if he fails to win. It's interesting that most of America will actually be cheering for Paquiao, despite the fact he's up against an American fighter. This is because Mayweathers ego is so big and self obsessed that he's difficult to like. Ali was different, as his ego and confidence was very comical and entertaining. The fans would still cheer for Ali win or lose, where as the fans will laugh if Mayweather is beaten

Mayweather is hugely unpopular to many boxing fans as, like Eubank, he treats boxing as a business/a job not as a sport. He's more interested in king money than making a name from himself.
