Maya Yoshida decides to donate 1% of annual salary to the Saints Foundation

The whole Saints team were very charitable last Saturday, helping those unfortunate Burnley strikers to as many goals as they wanted. Warms the heart, it really does.

 

I always paid my taxes with an enormous sense of good will Chilcs.

 

I actually wrote something similar about tax doing almost the same thing but then decided that I didn't want to turn Yoshida's thread into a political discussion so deleted it. Too late now .

I completely disagree about the point of charity being that it comes from goodwill. Point of charity is that it helps people.



The problem with only having charity come from those with good will is that on a capitalist society it can give those without goodwill a competitive advantage.

Lets say 2 people own similar companies. One donates a lot to charity. One doesnt give a **** about charity so keeps all his money. That means the person who doesn't give a **** about helping people will be able to outgrow his competitors through his investment. Not the company of the 2 you want to grow.

That's one reason I do like ideas that balance out the load somewhat.

Person does something good with money. Money becomes the point of the discussion. Politics takes over. Something good instantly forgotten.

I think that's very true for actors as well as sports starts. A few years ago I was a big Stargate fan and went to various conventions (yes, I'm a bit of a geek!) and someone dropped into a Q&A session that Michael Shanks donated x% of his salary to a specific charity. Shanks was not impressed that the fact was now known, he wanted to keep it private as he believes that giving to charities is a private thing and not to be gossiped about unless the donor wants it known.

 

Having met you Helen I never had you down as an Stargate fan.......I think I have watched every episode, but never went to a convention.

 

I've met almost every big Stargate actor - have photographic proof - and went to about half a dozen cons, one in Canberra Made some life-long friends thanks to a TV show...
