Seems more like they want to make sure max is fit and ready for the most important run in the clubs had for nearly 20 years.
McTomminay is fit all the time though, major difference. Who is gonna spend £40m on having ASM for 15 games a season? Plus in a fair few of those 15 games he's gonna be average or bad. We've made teams pay a fortune for crocks when we sold Dyer to West Ham and Woodgate to Real, but these days folks are more savvy. ASM would only stay for somewhere like the French league, and a team there ain't gonna pay much for him.
Max has a price of 40 to 50 million he's a player every manager would like in certain situations. 15 to 20 gets you a Jacob Murphy or a Chris Wood.
The Chris Wood price tag is slightly misleading as that was his release clause...which actually turned out to be worth every penny. £15m for Jacob Murphy, is probably right, but is ASM worth double that? No way, injuries and erratic performances prevent him from going for big money. Before Murphy started regularly he was a good impact sub, if you use ASM as that for your "certain situations" you aren't guaranteed a good impact sub, as early in the season ASM was poor on numerous occasions when coming on as a sub. ASM has resigned in his tendency to go on mazy runs and loose the ball and create chances for the opposition, but he still can't be counted on to be a consistent performer. And of course the certain situations need him to be fit, his injury record is massively frustrating.
Got it about a year ago - fairly cheap, good as new quality and I like ASM...used to like him more, but still a player I'm fine with on the back of my shirt. All good for me.
