Look, can we bin all this "tyrannical, egomaniac, power crazed, iron fist" stuff now? Like everyone, I watched that press conference carefully. Having worked for and with any number of truly tyrannical and egotistical people, I can absolutely guarantee you, were he really in that mould as his detractors would like us to believe, there is categorically no way that he would be able to garner that much affection and support from seemingly level-headed types such as Mauricio (and clearly a number of the players). Just would not happen.
If he is Aaron Martin then he still owes me the punch he told his mates he would give me while we were at college and I said that his head is abnormally small compared to his body while he was playing football and he overhead
Maybe so, but it's very unusual to find someone who is willing to put their money in and not want any control of what happens to it. Cortese didn't want to be answerable to the ownership, he wanted to essentially own the club without putting any of his own money in. From an organisational point of view, we're already at (or near) the highest level. The decision-making process only needs to continue on the same trajectory for those goals to be reached. "The Southampton Way" has already been drilled into the minds of everyone at the club and that attitude isn't just going to go away.
And yet he asked the staff to stay and manager to win on Saturday. Yup definitely wants us to implode
Was there any truth in the Cowboy v Red Indian mentality? Kill the Chief and they will run away? Did anyone think that it applies here too?
No, it really isn't, if we're talking about direct control. Power of the purse-strings, sure, but there are plenty of owners who have little role in the operations of the club as a club. You certain of that? I'm not. We have players in demand. We have a manager in demand. Our chances of progressing have largely hinged on those players and that manager putting this club above the chance to make more money and chase silverware elsewhere, and when asked most have cited Cortese's conviction as being central to their own. If a big club approaches Poch in the summer, is he as unlikely to turn down the chance as he was yesterday? If someone offers to double the wages of Lallana or Schneiderlin or Shaw, are they as likely to commit to remaining with the team as they were when it was led by someone with a monomaniacal focus on getting to the very top? And are we likely to be as dismissive of significant bids when an owner whose primary interests are found on the balance sheet has greater control?
With Mauricio Pochettino's stayimg on to until end of the current season and Cortese is reported as being interested in staying in England I do think that Mauricio was informed to stay on with his staff by Cortese as the current owners will sell the club in the summer and with Cortese having contacts with real money men I can see Cortese back and take this club up the next level
Well, in terms of who would put in money without taking control, Cortese has said in the past that he knows people with money who would be prepared to do the same as Markus Liebherr and take a back seat. Whether that would still apply now I don't know for sure but I wouldn't rule it out. If anyone has the connections, it would be Cortese. Whether or not it's desirable for him to return depends on what Katharina Liebherr's plan for the club is.
Such as? And "little" role is not the same as no role. Cortese was dead set against any interference whatsoever. I have no idea, but as I said, if the decision-making process continues in the same way, you have nothing to worry about. I'm certainly not going to worry until I have a reason to. Right now, any prospect of Pochettino or any players leaving is purely speculation.
Will Markus' seat remain vacant without Cortese there? I doubt we'll ever find anyone to come in that will pay as much attention to detail as Cortese did. For this reason, I fear we might not continue on our rise. Even the little things, like Birthday cards for players, has helped build team spirit, something I doubt other Chairman do. Plus, with no-one there to put emphasis on constant improvement to the extent that it appears Cortese did, staff may start to let their standards slip a little.
If you think he personally sent cards to players (beyond perhaps signing cards that are brought to him) you are dreaming. Cortese delegated all of those tasks to staff, and they are still at the club.
Just seen the back page of The Sun, full of ****e as per usual Sent from my RM-914_eu_euro1_337 using Tapatalk
Couldn't have been that attentive as there were several SFC staff he sacked who then successfully received out of court settlements for wrongful dismissal.
