Well, it was, to be fair. His prime was btween the late 80's and the mid-to-late 90's. So you're going back 15-25 years. Hence, anyone under 25 years old would not know the same player that the rest of us do.
Yep it is, there are plenty of players that were great for their clubs but have chips on their shoulders when they retire.
I may be wrong, but I really can only assume that the sort of carefree disdain that people here are showing Le Tissier, is due to their having not been at the dell, week-in, week-out, during the mid-90's. Watching him after '98/'99 when he was frankly past it or injured or whatever, is not the same. My point being, that there can be no 'exaggerating' or 'over-glamourising', because the man was simply beyond belief on a football pitch, and sorry, his loyalty cannot be questioned either. He gave up his career with England, and any chance he ever had of winnning medals, to keep Saints in the Prem. Sorry, but that is loyalty.
I've been a season ticket holder since I was 8(apart from last year), i'm 24 this year. I'm sorry I wasn't born early so I could see Le Tiss play more I'll have a go at my mum later cheers.
You can never understand how revered he was unless you saw him....he was unbelievable. It was an honour to see him in his pomp.
Ah, so i was right about the age thing then. Look, I'm not going for some sort of one-up-manship or anything. I just think trying to discuss this Legend/Bellend dichotomy is ****ing ridiculous for anyone who was never there to witness the "Legend" aspect of it. Therefore, I'm just going to continue defending my boyhood hero from anyone who feels like flipppantly belittling his career.
Well, I'm 22 and I started watching football in about 1994. I didn't see all of Le Tiss, but I saw a lot of him.
Yes but Le Tiss can still be both, he was a legend on the pitch as everyone knows, but what you do on the pitch does not make a man.
Blacky, I'm 43.... he is a legend, was brilliant on the pitch, however he is not covering himself in glory with how he speaks now.
No, it made him a bloody legend. How can a few nonsense throwaway comments to the press cause any self-respecting Saints fan to call Le Tissier a 'bellend'??!! Sorry guys, I like this forum and most of you talk a lot of sense, most of the time. But anyone posting this **** about Matty should be ashamed. Disgraceful.
I wasn't trying to flippantly belittle his career. Both Beefy and I just raied the point that his loyalty is objectively overstated. Yes, he was very loyal, yes, he was an incredible player and no, I wouldn't try to argue on any level that he's anything less than a club legend. Just, as I said, let's not pretend he'd have sooner died than moved club. And we can also separate his playing career from his actions since Pinnacle, because since then, as FLT just put it, he's not covering himself in glory.
Have to agree with FLT. I was in the West Stand when he made his début ad probably saw most of his games. I think most of the time he talks a lot of sense but occasionally he annoys me with his barbed comments.
He'd need the Hubble Telescope for that! Matt Le Tissier is one of the main reasons I'm a Saints fan, he's my hero, I'm slightly upset that people on this forum could be so blasphemous.
Blacky, I am not belittling him at all. I am saying that it is not a few throw away comments, it is a continual bitching about the chairman and how the club is run. He needs to give that a rest. None of this however diminishes that he is a legend.
