Really happy with our fight second half........but there is still some negatives to take from this. Almost every single game, we're giving teams goals...........I don't think I even have to bring up examples in this season, just think back to 95% of our games. Today.....poor head back by Mariappa. Then an owngoal by Nosworthy. We won.....I'm delighted and it was fantastic to watch...but frustrating to see us having to do so much when Burnley weren't that good. Better than us first half anyway though....we were very uninspiring. Kacaniklic made all the difference....sometimes when he starts he fades towards the end....so bringing him on at half time means he can be really effective. Despite Buaben almost scoring...he really needs to do some passing practice. Probably had 10% accuracy? You'd think he is the attacking option in our midfield...but if you break up every attack with a poor pass then there's no point.
Cheers MadMoose, it is always good to hear from someone at the game rather than just what us faraways listen to. It was mentioned in the thread that Buaben did not provide the wide service that was needed and clearly Kacaniklic had an almost immediate impact when he came on. The commentators all felt that Prince is not a wide man, and the plan had been to play our passing game down and through the middle which did not work.
Buaben wasn't the right selection, but holding back Alex was a good decision. In him and Sean Murray have two young, talented, attack-minded players (I hesistate to call Murray a winger), and the way to get the most out of them is to stagger when they play. If they both start we have absolutely nothing in the locker if the game isn't going well. Can't blame Kuszczak for either goal. Although a guy in his late teens who sits near me has come up with the idea that Nyron and Mapps are making mistakes because they're not used to listening to the keeper.
Yeah Burnley have some really good wingers, Wallace was causing us problems first half. Murray and Buaben weren't getting out wide that much, not having Yeates or Kacaniklic on isn't going to work. Still....it gives Dyche some insight and we got 3 points out of it anyway. Other than Yeates being dropped, which I think is quite unfair, most of the time he spots when players aren't doing so well and changes it up.
Kuszczak had nothing but praise from the commentators and from what I heard he is good at commanding his area.
Good win to get really...two tough games away from home coming up. I'll be going to West Ham but not too confident to be honest....
That's my impression too French: his decision making is good and there is definitely communication between him and the defence. I think the mistakes from the defenders today were statistically overdue, and hopefully will be the last major ones for a while, but I put the other guy's opinion out there for balance. Kuszczak's performance against the so-and-sos can probably can just be put down to rustiness.
Just got in from work and watched the goals, 2 great headers from NN all the goals were well taken Just a shame we had to wait to be 2 goals down before we scored On a serious note we need to sort out our very leaky defence, they need to switch on for 90 minutes no more lapses of concentration, that assist by AM was cringeworthy We also need to start scoring before the opposition, the stat that I mentioned earlier is actually shocking that our first 11 had only scored 13 goals between at start of play!
Funny old game..pretty average for most of it in terms of performances from both sides (Burnley didn't deserve to be 2 up) but glad we managed to fight back well and shows there is a great spirit in the club considering the 2 previous results. Shaky game at the back again but the front players were a real threat after half time. An important win and a couple more will see us safe.
Just saw this on the Burnley official website. Quotes from Eddie Howe: "....we have an inexperienced side and we have to grow up very quickly." "He was playing well and winning his aerial duels, which you have to do against Watford because they are a very strong, direct, physical side...." Of course we have a vastly experienced side that only knows how to play one way. What a tosser!
Was a bit more longball than in previous games TBH but then nothing was working 1st half. Played better football after going 2 down and we used the wide men more.
Our reputation is travelling ahead. I wait to see a team preparing to take on Callaghan and Barnes on the wing and the attackers Blissett and Jenkins.
You mean those long ball down the middle merchants who bypass the midfield of Jackett, Lohman & Taylor.
i miss mine too it was a gutter ...probably the worst mistake he's made all season... What happened to you Al!? I can assure you, it was no easier watching! lol Well, what can i say? The first half was dull as dishwater to be honest. We couldn't string more than 2 passes together, and it seemed we were in for another hammering. It looked like we were never likely to score. To be honest, they didn't look much better, but they did manage to keep the ball at least, something we really have struggled with in the last couple of games. Head tennis ensued, and then the goal, and i don't know about the players, but the fans heads dropped... After half time, and their second...it seemed there was no way back, and then we scored and from then, the fans were back in the game, and so were the players. Obviously, with 10 minutes to go, and a goal up, we couldn't believe they wouldn't equalise, and with 5 added minutes, it seemed a dead cert. But somehow we kept them out, not by skill, or style, just by sheer bloodymindedness. There was the occasional bit of good football, but again, nobody was outstanding today, generally we were average, i can't say anyone had a particularly poor game...good and bad in parts is more like it. But what a great feeling to leave the Vic on a high...it's been a while, and though it wasn't pretty, none of us can say the boys gave up, or weren't hard working and tenacious. A game of two halves, for sure. More of the second half performances would be good please!
Football can be a bewildering game at times and I still find it hard to explain yesterday's game. The starting line up looked as though Dyche was worried about concedig goals (rightly so) and so picked a solid looking midfield. The result was a narrow formation, not enough space and not helped by inaccurate passing. For a team playing at home we had too little of the ball in the first half and Mariappa, who had looked less assertive than usual, sent us in at HT looking out of it. Their second goal seemed to seal it. Deeney and Garner never stopped running and we began to play with more width but we didn't look especially dangerous. Then we scored three goals...and that after going two and a half games without a single one. Even the bloke who looked like Vinnie Jones in the Directors Box managed a smile. I'm very happy with the three points but we've undoubtedly lost games when we played a great deal better. Lets hoe West Ham have an off day on Wednesday...
