If recent weather patterns continue, that may be the only option open to residents down there. I know what you mean about wanting to be a regular again - I spent most of my teenage years visiting exotic places such as Hartlepool, Barrow, Workington, Southport, Halifax etc and loved every minute of it - even the 5-0 thrashing on a freezing February night in Carlisle when the heating in the bus broke down on the way back.
Same for me..... and to be able to go to the vic week after week would be so good again.... with none of the over expectation and then fall that I have had travelling to the vic from the farm in recent years....
Rock an Roll BB, beats my trips to York and Rochdale with a half empty supporters Coach, but I did get to see SEJ in his early days.
Great Daily Star report: MATEJ VYDRA'S two-goal blast ensured Watford boss Gianfranco Zola got the better of old Chelsea playing pal Gus Poyet. The Czech striker, on loan from Udinese, struck twice in barely a minute in the second half to take his tally to 12 and keep the Hornets bang in the promotion race. And that came after Troy Deeney’s opener had seen David Lopez equalise from the spot after 64 minutes. Brighton boss Poyet’s failure to find and sign a goalscorer is hurting his team – but Zola crucially has one in livewire Vydra, 20. This Watford team is a long way from Graham Taylor’s long-ball merchants of the 1980s. Under Zola, they are playing a terrific brand of attacking and passing football and this was a deserved victory at a sold-out Amex Stadium. Poyet brought wide man Kazenga LuaLua back into the side. But there was much speculation over the absence from the squad of £4million-rated winger Will Buckley, with the transfer window looming and predators lurking. A slight hamstring injury was the official reason given. Watford should have taken the lead after seven minutes. A right-wing corner from Almen Abdi found Czech midfielder Daniel Pudil unmarked but he headed wastefully wide. In response, LuaLua’s explosive shot after 19 minutes required a flying stop from former Arsenal keeper Manuel Almunia. Hornets striker Deeney then had a header saved by Tomasz Kuszczak – who was on loan at Vicarage Road last season. Abdi soon saw a free-kick kept out by Kuszczak while Vydra blazed over the top from 20 yards. Eight minutes after the break, Watford took a deserved lead when Pudil set up Deeney who netted with an angled drive. Lopez levelled things up from the spot, his second penalty in two games, after LuaLua challenged Almunia and from the loose ball was fouled by teenager Tommy Hoban. But then came Vydra’s two goals in a minute. He put Watford back in front after 67 minutes with a 20-yard drive that took a huge deflection off El Abd and looped over Kuszczak. And then the forward raced clear before coolly finishing.
Nigel Callaghan, John Barnes, David Bardsley, Kevin Richardson - yep - all well known as long ball merchants. This twat probably never even watched us back in the day.
Agreed Dan - at least we never 'did a Wimbledon' and unleash a Vinnie Jones on an unsuspecting world. Nor did we bore the arse off the public a la Arsenal a few years later. Never mind - not witnessing what we did was their loss.
And a large brass tap was thrown through one of the side windows on the coach by the ever lovable Carlisle fans by way of wishing us a safe return journey. The M6 was not yet open throughout and there was snow on Shap Fell as we made slow progress by the old A6. Keith Eddy got injured in that game and missed the semi-final at White Hart Bog against Chelsea. Cracking night out..........
I got my first season ticket in 86/87 (it was £60 ) and I seem to recall some great football being played that year - especially the 2-0 victory against the "mighty" Liverpool. Still, as you say, their loss.
We used to get some great receptions - I remember getting a kicking at Highfied Road and Filbert Street and countless times at The Kennel..
We have had some great finishers over the tears, Luther Blissett, Mo Johnston, Kevin Phillips, Danny Graham, but one on one with the keeper I think Vydra is the best I have seen..
