As reported below, Harry Wright injured his thumb trying to prevent Exeter's second goal, and was replaced between the sticks by Jimmy Oakes for the rest of the match.
But the expression 'gave his gloves' is probably figurative rather than literal. Until as recently as the 1960's most goalkeepers did not wear gloves. That must have been pretty chilly on their fingers in freezing weather, when they were unable to keep warm running around like their outfield team-mates.
