My family fought them too, they fought & died so we could be free to think freely and be free to question our government, you may not like Linekers points. That’s irrelevant he MUST be free to say them

GL has commented on a very hot topic. Whether you agree with his likening the current Tories to the Nazi Germany of the 30s or not (much as I dislike this current shower they are FAR from being 1930s Nazis), he has stimulated a hot debate about the small boat crisis.
    Some things are puzzling me:
Without prejudice, why do these people spend their last penny and risk their lives to cross illegally from FRANCE (a perfectly safe and civilised first world country) to cross illegally to the UK where, even if they arrive with their lives they have no guarantee of being admitted as a citizen.
Also, instead of bunging France a huge wedge of taxpayers money for them to ignore the boats, why don’t we use the cash to pursue our own criminal investigation into trapping the people smugglers. The boats must be sourced from somewhere - there will be evidence that can be followed up. The migrants themselves manage to contact them to book and pay for their crossing so why not start there?
The whole thing is a fiasco and throwing money at France is just a (bad) joke and Macron is pissing himself laughing at us.

I replied to Clifton’s post, I’m sorry if I offended anyone, but I won’t be accused of treating the subject likely , especially by someone criticising free speech , sorry again

I know, I’ve been defending his right to say it, even if we don’t like what he’s said.

SAD when you agree to what he said which was really scraping the barrel and opening wounds. You obviously dont know or appreciate the depth of evil the 1930's Nazism was to members of the human race. There is a modern day manifestation of that mans evil .... he lives in or hides in the Kremlin, accompanied by his massive pram full of toys

As I keep saying he was referring to the language used only, I don’t accept your interpretation of what I said, as you yourself admitted I keep saying the same stuff. That’s because you don’t understand what I’m actually saying, it’s the limitations of a forum I guess , but you misrepresent me by suggesting in any way that I don’t find the Nazis, what they said and what they did as completely repugnant.

That’s stretching it a bit, many are, or have been members of the Tory party, or even have looked to become Tory MPs , or have given large sums of money to them.
The problem is when an issue like the Lineker one comes up, people rightly or wrongly will question their impartiality. It at least brings into question their integrity.

    Afternoon guys <hug>

I am all for freedom of speech. GL (like everyone else) has the right to say what he wants. But he has to take the consequences which comes with that. If he has broken any rules or says something offensive then he should be held accountable like any one of us would be.

Forgetting the Germany reference that has upset some politicians, I am a little frustrated with his opinion because he clearly thinks the boats should be allowed to continue to cross the channel - which is illegal - and it puts peoples lives at risk. There are processes in place where these people can claim asylum to the UK legally, without risking their lives.

GL is acting like people illegally crossing the channel are fleeing a country in trouble. But they ain't. They've already left that terrible situation and passed through several safe countries and are in another safe country - France! They could have applied for asylum in any of those safe countries but they want the UK. That's fine. They are entitled to do so. But they have to apply for asylum to the UK using the proper processes and not unnecessary putting their life at risk crossing the channel.

Something obviously needs to be done to stop the boats crossing before anyone else needlessly dies. It cannot continue to happen and the bad thing is people are profiting from it. Traffickers will keep filling the boats again and again. Also these people coming illegally will be jumping the queue to claim asylum in front of those who actually follow the process correctly. That isn't fair. Plus the tax payer are currently paying £7 million a day on hotels for these people who have illegally entered the UK by boat. That's a lot of money which should be better spent elsewhere like helping those through the cost of living crisis and/or increase the percentage of pay rises to NHS staff for example.

To me GL is ignorant to the issues that his opinion promotes and that can be very dangerous.

    Who is?

Gary Linkers is being criticised for evoking 1930's Germany. The inference is clear, but the Tories’ migration bill does not refer to minorities as rats, and use words like eradicate. 1930's Germany did. There is no equivalence. A consequence of free speech is criticism and challenge. Gary Lineker should be criticised and challenged for his causing deep offence, his trivialising of a obscene period of history. He was absurd.

Does this criticism and challenge differ for an individual contracted the BBC and a face of the impartial BBC? Does this differ for the BBC's highest lavishly paid star?

To keep the BBC impartial there will have to be professional limitations on what individuals who work for the BBC say.

most are not short of money! those that are have deals to pay it back when they get here through crime? or blackmarket ventures ...
There is a 2 sided look we get there and disappear / we get caught escorted. Everyday border force catch people who arrived illegally and never registered most are from transport boat people are the ones that make it ... Our Islands will eventually be unable to support the population...

look at THE CITY OF BATH ... has a population of 102,000 split between children, parents, adults and the over 65's ... in the last 2 years a similar number of illegals have entered the UK so reality is a whole new city needed every 2 years. What does that mean, well it means utilities like water and sewage, it means refuse disposal it means housing these illegals are just the "front" of bringing in the relatives or generating them! so at least 30,000 residences need food etc so need 5 o0r 6 supermarkets so some employment! but needs businesses to work at so more building currently we looking for about 8 square miles of land to start .. yes start this accomodation for 2 years of illegals. Food at present UK has undergone a massive change to food production as you travel around there are hundreds of square miles now under plastic tunnels. Need transport so more roads garages pollution a few jobs but where's the money to keep the vehicles on the road bear in mind the initial illegals population is mostly adults from 16 to 50 ..... this would be just the start now looking at about 10-12 square miles very few jobs mostly state paid ...... in 10 years we need to have 5 new cities of Bath the original new Bath now taking 15 sq miles
imagine concrete and brick from PORTISHEAD to WSM to BRIDGWATER to ASHTON GATE chewvalley lake would always be empty and water rationing ...

Where we differ is I don’t believe that whether he’s well paid, or not comes into it. He’s not a member of the senior management team, he’s only highly paid because it’s the “going rate” for the job he does, if it’s not then why would the BBC pay him such a high amount.
I actually don’t think what he said equates to what you suggests, but really that’s irrelevant. I would defend his right to say it whatever.

How can the BBC be impartial if there are no limitations on what people say?
