The Football Association's general secretary Alex Horne has insisted match-fixing is not widespread in the game but has warned against complacency.
Horne was among representatives from five sports â football, cricket, tennis and the two rugby codes â who attended a meeting with ministers in Whitehall on Tuesday morning for talks on tackling fixing. It followed the arrest of six people, including the Blackburn Rovers striker DJ Campbell, following an investigation into spot-fixing in football by the National Crime Agency.
Horne, who was at the meeting with the culture, media and sport secretary Maria Miller, said the "general consensus" was that fixing was not a widespread problem
I am tempted to reply with; He would say that wouldn't he! Call me cynical but I would be very surprised if PL football was squeaky clean. Such huge amounts of money sloshing around in the game would suggest to me that's it's almost impossible to believe it is without corruption.
We have seen on more than one occasion some very strange decisions and results especially, I recall, on the crucial last day of a season when the ramifications are huge. Goalkeepers letting in silly goals, officials making odd decisions and even the odd case of food poisoning at a crucial time. Luck? bad or good! yes maybe it is but I don't think you can blame me for being a tad suspicious. How much do refs. earn compared to the players? Hmm!
