I thought the first parliament under Blair created a far fairer society than anything I had saw previously or since..

The mythical north south divide can be generally ascribed to the industrial revolution and the need for a large work force but treatment of the workers led to strikes and lock outs from which the unions and Labour Party sprang. Unions were not formed by rebellious workers but people desperate to receive a living wage from profits pocketed by landowners and factory bosses.

One exception is the Tolpuddle Martyrs who were transported for forming a society of farm workers in Dorset. Being labourers they had no rights.

It is not a myth that the vast majority of wealth, spending and investment is in the south east..

True enough, but the wealth provided by the industrial midlands and north through coal and cotton manufacturing came from the north and people lived and died in the places they were born. The south was relatively unchanged which did not happen by chance.

Bedfordshire remains rural and agricultural so contribution to GB is relatively small, bit like the 18th century.

It's great here Nostalgic. The only problem with the 18th century is the lack of a decent bandwidth in the village.

Would have been a great shock to have the air ships flying over from Cardington.
