By many accounts, we had plenty of notice, and one warship and a submarine would have been well enough to put Argentina off from invading..

What with this one Polaris nuclear submarine some wanted to send down there...

We only had 4, 1 or 2 were usually in dock, and to arm them and send them thousands of miles takes a bit of notice.

Fellas, in the early 80s Britain was in a conflict with the IRA and there was also a lot of posturing with the Russians (Cold war and all that). The Falklands were probably the last thing on anyone's minds. The negotations with the Argentinians were hardly urgent from our point of view and the descaling of Royal Navy operations left the Argies thinking we weren't up for it. And they went for it.

    Then Maggie came along....

She ordered the strike on the General Belgrano despite the fact it was outside the exclusion zone.
The hit on Sir Galahad & HMS Sheffield was in pure retaliation. The British military really underestimated the Argentinian air force.

As for our "special relationship" with the USA? They never even broke off diplomatic relations with Argentina.

It wasn't a war zone at that time Comm. The ship was on it's way home.
When Sir Galahad went down it left 45 Commando with a 50 mile yomp to do across marshland.
    Sorry mate.

All she was was very lucky - not for anyone else mind you, just herself.

She was on the way out and then she let the Argentinians get her the votes.

Didn't matter about how many died, or the cost of the conflict (remember we were skint at the time).

Bitch played us like a violin and got back in. No sympathy here.

Shall we discuss her loving family now?

    ggggrrr

Billy, the Yanks were split over the conflict (probably due to trade links with Latin America). But they did let the Royal Navy use their base at Ascension Island and provided copies of intelligence reports. They also tried to broker a compromise to the conflict but failed.

I wonder what would have happened if Claudio maringoni (Argentinian) had stayed with us in 1982? and Kempes and Ardilles at Spurs. That is why the Argy refs have it in for us.
