Johnny Giles, Brian Greenhoff & Lee Sharpe were also sent to Leeds when deemed not good enough or Utd!!
I remember Giles as well, Sniffer, the difference was those two left under a cloud and disliked the club they had played for. Also Bruce has had money to buy success and look what's happening at his present club. Regardless who he played for in the past, I don't rate him, but that's just my opinion.

It's because they took their chance, failed, and now have massive problems, both financial, especially financial!, and the fact that every player knows they've shot their bolt & will need to seriously restructure. The impact of this is that current players are offski if they want success, and offski if they're concerned that their future wages might be in jeopardy. The ones that stay are prolly their biggest financial headaches. Furthermore, and for exactly the same reasons, no-one will want to join them, unless young, has-been after a wage, or journeyman. Takes a while to build another team in these circumstances. As for us, top 6 is the best we can hope for as we've adopted the 'slow build' approach. So far.
