He had a very difficult start and you're right to point out its a point often forgotten. When you consider he didn't have the excuse that Solano had being foreign and all, it was very poor indeed for a player of that ability. When you look back the much done down Kenny Dalglish left a lasting legacy at Newcastle. Given, Speed, Solano all went on to be a massive part of our future upturn. Not to mention the likes of Dabizas and Griffin. I still think the bloke had the poisoned chalice following Keegan. He is often done down for selling Ginola and Ferdinand. Yet when you listen to Shepherds comments etc he was actively being instructed to reduce the wage bill significantly, and was dealing with certain players (Ginola) who had already begun agitating before he arrived. Dalglish appeared to take the pain for others to benefit. Mind Speeds start was no where near as bad as Solano. He had such a tough time and for 12-18 months looked like he wanted shipped back to South America because he wasn't gonna cut it. Says something about the little fella that he the mental fortitude to get through that. Speed similar. There is a reason these two were so revered in the end, we do love a player who comes out swinging when they are struggling. Warren Barton was the same under Keegan. Perchino under Hughton. Fans would sometimes do well to remember that patience is a virtue and players are allowed to improve and get better. The modern fan though often makes up their mind after 90-180mins. Crazy.
And also Didi Hamann!! Dalglish gets a raw deal when people talk about our history, he put together the core of players who performed for us under Bobby. At one point we were fielding the captain of England (Shearer), Peru (Solano), Wales (Speed) and either current or future captains of Germany (Hamann), Greece (Dabizas), Ireland (Given), Northern Ireland (Hughes) and possibly more as that's just off the top of my head.
