Still a very good looking woman. I think she stopped playing music after The Adverts and worked for the local council. Maybe Social Services.
Fun fact - also saw a little known Irish band at the same venue - either 80 or 81 .... U2 ... true dat...
It has a great line up every year. I don't go to many gigs other than this, can see so many bands in 4 days.
Worst of all time was Sid Vicious. Loads of bands had bass players who were told to just slap the strings in time to the music, until you learn to play. But Sid was beyond useless, utterly out of his depth and never got any better. Whereas Glenn Matlock, who played bass for the Pistols before Sid replaced him, was actually a musician.
They were absolute class - saw quite a few bands at that venue, some not bad, some pretty awful - I'd never heard their stuff before - at least not knowingly - the place went absolutely ballistic when they played 'I Will Follow' ...
Quite correct mate ... my bad - put it down to old age ... didn't Matlock go on with someone else 'tho?
Loads. Including The london cowboys, who I saw at Dingwalls, with Jerry nolan of the New York dolls on drums.
I remember reading quite a bit about the old venues in London - The Marquee, The 100 Club, The Nashville, The Hope & Anchor, The Town And Country Club, many bands started around these pub venues hoping to "make it" in the mid 70s. Any of them still around Archie?
The 100 Club is still there, or it was quite recently, I saw a ska band there. My dad used to watck skiffle bands there in the 50s, then I saw a few punk acts at the same venue in the 70s. The pillars holding up the roof get in the way a bit, there're two right in front of the stage. I went past the Hope and Anchor the other day, the pub is still there but not sure about live bands (saw The Stranglers there once, downstairs in the basement). The Town and Country in Kentish Town is now the Forum, still there, or it was when I saw The Specials there a few years ago.. Not sure about the Marquee or Nashville. I saw The Psychedelic Furs at The Roundhouse a few years back, so assume that's still there. So is Dingwalls, think it's been completely refurbished though. I went to a book launch there once, The Quantum Astrologer's Handbook by Michael Brooks.
Maybe I should do a long overdue "Favourite Thread" on what everyone's favourite (or best) music venue is/was. I could combine it with "Favourite Soup" and "Favourite Biscuit" simultaneously.
My favourite old haunt, the Standard on Blackhorse Road, is now a Sainsbury's Local. Back in the day, the Standard played host to iron Maiden, Wishbone Ash, the Clash, Rod Stewart and many others who went on to make it big. I first met my wife there in 2000 at an Aerosmith tribute night. There was a huge hole in the roof and the pit was flooded, but no one seemed bothered. Terrific memories of a classic venue.
