The only thing that will make Wenger step down is if Spuds win the league. He'll never be able to live it down. The board sure as hell aren't getting rid of him.
In a season where the opportunity is golden, Chelsea had a meltdown, United are topsy turvy, City are mediocre, and Spurs and ****ing Leicester (****ING Leicester) are leading the pack, there is no excuse for Wenger to trot out if Arsenal fail to win the league. As someone else already pointed out, City, Chelsea and United will ALL be getting new managers next season, and I daresay will all spend £100m+ on new players. Plus Spurs and Leicester will have CL football and will spend to improve. I have said it for many years, you will not win the league ever again under this guy...just won't happen.
You have left LFC out of that list LFC has the best manager and will improve. This anger by the fans towards the manager is understandable but misplaced. Wenger has never been a hell raiser in the Ferguson mode, giving underperforming players the hair dryer treatment or kicking stuff in the dressing room. He is not called the professor for nothing. He sets up the team and tactics and he leaves the players to perform. These are seasoned internationals and do not need a wenger to gee them up. For me, they didn't approach the match with the right attitude. Seeing the opposition team sheet, they thought they will score themselves but will not concede with such a "weak inexperienced ' United striker on the pitch. Basically the players underestimated United. By the time they realised that United were playing as if they had nothing to lose it was too late. If they play that match again, I have no doubt that Arsenal will win 4 or 5-0. And they are very much in the title fight.
My brother-in-law is a Rangers fan so has no bias towards Arsenal one way or another. Over the years he's been pro-Wenger. But even now says that if Spurs or Leicester win the league this season then Wenger would have some big questions to answer and he doesn't see how AW could possibly excuse that or carry on in his role.
Absolute horseshit. Why do football clubs have managers then? "leaves the players to perform"? Thats fine if you are Pep Guardiola managing Barca and 99% of your opponents teams are worth less than the hair on Messi's arse crack, but in the Premier League that **** isn't gonna wash (Pep will find that out next year too). You see you cant just set up a tactic and throw your team out there and leave them to it. Because your opponent can change their tacitcs mid game, then what happens? You are screwed. Wengers inspired 75th minute substitutions are about as useful as a chocolate fireguard. A little Dynamism is required of the best managers these days, in this league, where the playing field is far more level than in other leagues.
I cannot believe that he has not said anything at half time to his players. He is not the screaming type. The players have to take the lion share of the responsibility.
I have to agree with this. The league has been there for the taking this season and if Arsenal allow Spurs to win it, then I think Wenger is going to come under huge pressure and he may feel it's time to step aside.
If either Leicester or Spurs win the league this season, which is looking increasingly likely, his position becomes untenable. He has to go. There is no reason at all for him to stay on.
I am as frustrated with our up/down performances as others but once on the pitch it is the players responsibility to produce. However there does not seem to be a plan or shape to play to & that is AW's responsibility. Also we have no natural leader on the pitch like Tony Adams. Any thoughts?
I agree, but I really, really hope that he's been planning to step down in the summer and that they've already got the progression plan in place and a replacement lined up, because IMO the time to step down was last summer and to do it off the back of the cup successes, with a good time to plan the succession, rather than to do it now his position is untenable because Spurs or Leicester have won the league!
I feel like ranting and raving like he does, but I just don't have the energy for it. It's always the same with us, so I blame myself for partly expecting/hoping this season would be any different when we have this stubborn, arrogant donut in charge. But Leicester or Spurs winning the league means every reason we've had for not competing in the last 12 years e.g. there were no quality players available, who could do a better job than Wenger, we have limited finances etc instantly becomes redundant. It's just embarrassing to watch this unfold. Amusing for you though, I'm sure.
Its ok, Ty reckons you are gonna go on a 10 game winning streak, starting at WHL and go on to win the league. Seriously this guy is a total ****ing helmet. His optimism, combined with him wearing everything Arsenal, makes him look special needs. A fully grown ass man with Arsenal jacket, hat, shirt, Headphones, drinking bottle.......ffs
It's puzzling. Wenger doesn't seem to understand that standing still in the Premier League is suicidal. You have to keep moving forward all the time or you sink. Signing Cech was a fantastic move, but it wasn't enough. You should have replaced Arteta, Flamini, Rosicky and probably a couple of others, too. The Premier League race is far from over and you could still go on to win it, but is that enough? You're fine financially, so you should be looking to push on, fight for the Champions League and build for the future. The club seems to be happy treading water and picking up as much cash as possible, which is pretty insulting for the fans. Villa tried that and look where it got them.
You missed the fact that he refers to everyone at the club by their first name, like they're his ****ing mates.
This culture of complacency at the club all stems from the top. Until AW goes, our fortunes are not going to improve. As you've already alluded to: with City getting Guardiola next year and spending more money; Chelsea will also get a top manager and spend money; United could be getting Mourinho but have a lot of financial power too; in addition to Spurs' rapid improvement under MP and Klopp at Liverpool, everything was suited for us to take the league by storm this season because we're not going to get a better chance to win it for a long time, especially as we had the most stability out of all the other clubs. And we're still screwing it all up. You're right that we should have replaced those players, but it's also down to mentality as well. The players don't have one that suggests that they're relishing the challenge and that they're up for the fight. Where I disagree with you is that we could still go on to win the title. League campaign is done, as far as I'm concerned. We blew our chance yesterday. But to be honest, it's hard to make a compelling case that we actually deserve the title this season because we have been poor for a while now. It's between you and Leicester, and possibly City as well if they can get a run going.
I just feel flat. Watched that debacle with no rage or anger, just blank acceptance that this is what we do now. Football is sh*t. Some things I took from the last few games though: Sanchez - wish we'd stop putting his name on the team sheet as he's not been seen in the last 3-4 months. Feel we're wasting an opportunity by only putting out 10 players each game. Walcott - Gabby Agbonlahor-lite w*nk-fest. Tired of him getting cut slack for being polite, articulate and, above all, English. He's great 2-3 games a season and average if you're lucky for the rest of them. We've been awful since late December. It's just most around us has been poor too so hidden it somewhat. I hate the Leicester love-in and Spurs in general. Football is sh*t.
Our only consistent performer this season has been our goalkeeper. Ozil has had some decent games but we've been complete dross ever since Cazorla got injured
