thing is that suicidal people often get to the stage where they think those they leave behind will be better off without them. they're mostly well past logic and straight thinking.

This thread is largely full of understanding and sympathetic posts. I really don't think there's anything to be offended about, unless of course you enjoy looking for it.

This formum has had honest and free debate into depression before.

If anyone feels that they are heading down that road, there are plenty on here who can help and offer understanding without judgement.

They should have erected a 10 foot high fence on the bridge walkways from the start, it would have prevented so many tragedies.

I really feel for the family of the deceased and the poor people who witnessed it. My niece was one who saw it and was shaking like a leaf. She is mid 20s. she didn't see it full on but more from the corner of the eye. The result was horrendous, my wife parks her car in there and couldn't get it as it was shut. Very very sad story.

I was thinking precisely the same - who has shown a lack of understanding about depression?

Every idea. Say that to the 12 and 13 year old kids that had to witness this. The aftermath my family had to go through clearing **** up after another family member committed suicide.

I'd suggest you have no idea, absolutely no ****ing idea at all.

Why is the person committing suicide selfish though?

Can we maybe agree that some have different ideas, and each could well be right in their own way?

I understand when people talk about this tragedy being avoided, but to some extent, the act was just one scene in the tragedy, and sadly for those involved, it won't be the final one.

It's probably the wrong term for it now, but mental health issues are finally becoming more openly talked about, so hopefully more people will get help before they reach such a desperate state. Somethimes, it's not a reaction to events, but a chemical imballance, I hope not, but it could affect any of us in some way or other.

Doing it in a public place? Like people throwing themselves in front of a train - giving the train driver no chance of stopping. Train drivers have to live with that for the remainder of their lives.

I have sympathy for those that suffer depression. But not those who commit suicide selfishly and have a really negative impact on other people's lives through that act.

I have witnessed it first hand and I believe the stress of someone in our family doing the very same thing resulted in my Mum also dying early through the stress and strain it caused on her.

So don't anyone on here say - you don't understand or any of that other ****ing bullshit.

Are all cases of suicide selfish, or just the ones in public places? For a lot of people who suffer with depression, suicide is the only cure, from their perspective.

Just to say sorry fella. People have different opinions and maybe have reasons for that. I can't find answers to all the unanswered questions. Cheers!!!

You sound like a very angry man GLP. Suicide is a tragic event for everyone concerned but to lambast a suicidee for doing it in a 'selfish' way is to misunderstand or ignore the nature of depression regardless of how much sympathy you may have for sufferers.

I think the fact some people feel more sympathy for family members or witnesses than the person who actually committed suicide is a sad reflection on how even now, with all the advances in medical research available, people still don't adequately understand mental illness and why people choose suicide.
