Also need to add that we used to be called. Joke club with a tiny ground, who only managed to stay up on the last day of the season; I didnt like hearing that much.
if they didnt have a chairman who could keep pumping millions into the club to pay the wages of players too good for the club, they wouldnt still be in the premier league. they would have been relegated by now.
On dodgy ground complaining about a rich owner spending money. Admittedly, Markus was a sensible investor, but he still spent millions preventing us from going under and setting us on our way.
By whom? Before the era of st marys and online forums there was little way for fans of other clubs to have a pop. From my experience of talking to away fans in the Dell days the majority liked Saints as a club. Same went for fellow England fans at international games when the topic came up.
They did "like" us, but we were the "little" club down the road that managed to survive each year in the top flight. The little club, with the little ground that shouldn't have been a top flight club. I used to get this a lot in the 80's, especially once the gate receipt rules changed. I would agree that we were popular amongst other fans, until a certain chairman stuck his face on the telly every other week. I don't think Wigan portray the "image" of a Premier league club and I think this year was one year too many that they stayed up; I just think you can't criticise or call any club a joke club. If they are in a league, it's because they deserve to be there because the results were right on the pitch.
