What would be the point in bringing in a digital ID if it’s not going to be linked to anything? One very easy excuse off the top of my head would be to stop people buying kids tickets etc and paying a cheaper fare. Or pensioner discount rates etc. You can already get a Yoti card which is your student ID that’s required to get student discount on transport. In Denmark they already require you to provide your ID to buy tickets on their public transport system
Starlink does have a use, we are lucky living on a small island, my brother uses it when he is travelling in Australia, plenty of other countries around the world need it as it is better than putting in millions of miles of cables or masts.
i never denied it's use, but the fact they are all blasted up there and that the military have 'aquired' plenty of them to use and that makes me wonder how much we have not been told about them. mainly though, all it takes is one decent sun flare and we have plenty of this space debris coming down at once, most should burn up on entry mind
What i have read and see are that starlink is different from military satellites, they may use it for general communication but use own systems for secure transmission. Watched plenty of launches from spacex and all military launches cut off early from transmission.
I get why this worries some people, unfortunately its the world we live in. Amazon will have multiple layers of redundancy and security measures in each of their datacenters, usually when something like this happens it's human error like someone incorrectly making a network change. Its rarely hardware related for example. It does bring into focus how reliant we are on the cloud these days but I can't see that changing. I don't think this would affect a digital ID at all, like @darthmixalot1 says it would likely be an ID you keep on your phone...it would be a bit useless if you needed internet connectivity to use it (knowing past government ventures into IT however...anything is possible). The ID will likely just be a modern equivalent of having to give your National Insurance number for things like payroll etc.
If that's all it is, why not just give everybody a national insurance card? Why does it have to be on a smart phone, is it BECAUSE GPS on them tracks your exact location? They are already talking about being "able to access your OWN money" on it. If the card can allow you to access money, it therefore can refuse you access to your money. This is dangerous, very very dangerous.
I agree there are a lot of questions around but it isn't intended to access or block access to your money, I've not seen a single reliable source suggesting that, or even semi-reliable source other than social media (which is so far down the reliability scale it doesn't really count). It can be used to open a new bank account, as your ID has already essentially been verified. If the government wanted to stop you from accessing your money they already can, they don't need a digital ID to do that. Like I say there are questions around what it can be used for, the main question I would like answering is how they will protect the collected data securely.
It's a one way street to a social credit score, mate, which includes access to your own money, freedom of speech and the services you currently take for granted.
The short answer to your final answer is they won't protect your data securely. Somebody who worked at child benefit place in Washington left a memory stick on a bus with the bank account details of every single claimant of it on a bus. Millions of them. That was 20 odd yrs ago. The hackers will be licking their lips as we speak. Name, date of birth, address, n.i. number, bank details etc etc all in one place conveniently for them. If it goes ahead I guarantee that some computer whizz kid will hack into it within months and hold the government to ransom for the info, which the gov won't pay on principle. Then it will be dissipated via the dark Web to cyber criminals who will be more than willing to pay for it. The gov were warning us about cyber attacks just last week ironically enough. Jaguar Land Rover were basically shut down for a month recently, I could go on but I wont. It is asking for trouble.
I'll admit I can see how that can be perceived as a way to control money, but again its just guesswork until the full facts are confirmed. It could be that you will have the ability to use it as a way to access your bank account, making it compulsory would be very very worrying indeed. I'm certainly not going to listen to the scaremongering however until all the facts are laid out. Kier certainly isn't helping matters by saying things like that, and one of the reasons the party needs a new leader.
Yeah and thats my worry, I work in IT and see how common cyber attacks are...its asking for trouble based on past government endeavors. Will no doubt cost about a trillion quid too.
