To be fair that quells the argument that everyone who voted reform is racist then, otherwise 4 million of them would’ve been on the streets.
"Harsh sentences" harsh hɑːʃ adjective unpleasantly rough or jarring to the senses. cruel or severe. (of a climate or conditions) difficult to survive in; hostile. (of reality or a fact) grim and unpalatable. having an undesirably strong effect.
What's your IQ? Christ mate. I made the statement: Harsh sentences just stoke the flames. I didn't quote anybody, it was a statement all on its own, reacting off the back of the general feel of the thread. You then quoted me and pressed the debate.
You would be surprised what resources are available to the prison service. They have police cells, prison hulks, and as a last resort doubling up on existing accomodation. Anyone given a custodial sentence will be accommodated.
How many spaces would that amount to though, it's unquantifiable obviously, maybe another 500 spaces.
Yes, I quoted you on that particular post. And I didn't claim you said the sentences are harsh because you haven't said either way. I'm not quoting you now, I'm asking a question ... ... who's saying the sentences are harsh, are you?
"harsh sentences just stoke the flames" There you go, that's my opinion. If you're asking about specific cases, present them here and I'll tell you're if I feel they're harsh.
This isn't going away because it is a symptom of something bigger. That's how you know it will persist over the coming years and decades, unless the problem, not the symptom, is solved.
That's not an answer, it's a generality. Everyone would agree that unjustly harsh sentences, in any situation, fan flames ... ... no one has said any of these current sentences is harsh, you haven't.
It's an argument about the most serious UK story currently in the news on a thread about that specific subject. I don't see how it's petty, It's currently about whether rioters, such as we saw in Sunderland, should be jailed and for how long. It's totally on-topic as far as I can see.
