Don't start being a toffee-nosed trophy snob with me. It's bad enough the mackems saying the Fairs Cup win didn't count without you piping up with the Anglo-Italian Cup!
The thing people need to understand about St James' and the name change, is that nobody wants the owner we have, never mind his cheap **** shop taking over official ownership of the stadium name. I don't particularly see the point of view that changing history for a few coins is somehow beneficial in the longterm to fans, unless y'all are accountants and get a stiffy over turnover figures. Most likely funds incoming from a name change will never filter down to your level in terms of ticket prices, or players on the park, but I may just be a pessimistic product of Ashley's tenure. Changing a stand name is not really the same, especially one that isn't the traditional holy grail end of the stadium like the Kop or The Gallowgate, but tradition is undervalued in this game now, and too readily sold, and it's sad.
That most certainly would be the case at Newcastle, your owner is a notorious penny pincher. Probably not the case at a lot of other clubs though, Chelsea's owner, for example, is known to be pretty generous with his cash.
If someone was willing to pay us hundreds of millions to play in a didn't colour then yes! I'd rather we had the chance to be successful than stay mid table #sellout I'd change my own name if someone paid enough!
The success of a blue and yellow Mersey Rovers at the Dunkin Donuts would be very hollow indeed. It simply wouldn't be the team I'd supported all these years.
But realistically, we're only talking about the stadium (something that's already been confirmed won't happen) and not the team name or colours. Plus as many have said, we'd still call it Anfield regardless. If you're that bothered about it then why accept the many foreign players (outside British Isles) we see at the club? Afterall, traditions weren't that were they? It was mainly Irish and Scottish players.
'If I'm that bothered by it' It's not an issue of tradition it's one of naming. I brought in the change of colour because if it can be said, it's just a name, then that could extend to, it's just a colour. Before you know it everything iconic about your club, that makes it your club, has gone. As you sort of alluded to, but I'm taking the thought a bit further, players come and go, managers come and go, what makes it still LFC is the very thing you don't mind changing - the name. And I know we're not talking about changing the club name but if as you say it's just a name, then that could be next. I also have in mind Hull Tigers and Cardiff changing kit colour and the uproar that produced. I accept your view point, I think others will agree with you but I don't.
Me neither....if money and success are more important than anything else then it begs the question....who would you support if we got relegated or were skint? I've never really bought the "we need to sell our soul to compete financially" argument either. What we actually need to do is stop pissing millions and millions on **** players, their wages and their agents fees
Actually no, Highbury wasn't iconic, its only claim to fame was a film called "the Arsenal Stadium mystery" or something similar and that one of the Compton brothers that played cricket for England also played football for Arsenal. The pile of dirt you refer to was more iconic than Arsenal FC, it was the Spion Kop, ok so, Highbury had marbled halls but that was just the north-south divide of the day, mud, blood and broken bones and a will to win league titles pisses all over fancy decor anyday.
Well since I clearly say I'd rather us play entertaining football and win ****all quite often, that pretty much ****s on that theory lol Whether we pay at Anfield or not, in red or not, etc, it's still the same club! A name (or colour) means ****all.
This! Completely agree with you. Some fans believe that your level of spend is related to where end up in the league. We have spent so much but with little to show for it, and there are clubs around Europe who spend a fraction but achieve a lot more. Spend the money a lot wiser, and the big commercial deals will follow. Having said that, for a club who hasn't won the title in over 20 years and limited participation in the CL since, we've done very well to compete with the big boys (from a commercial perspective). The fact we;re still in the top 10 in the Deloitte Money League is credit to the owners.
....yes and a lot of that appeal is EXACTLY because of the name and tradition associated with Liverpool FC. The glorious European nights, the atmosphere of the Kop and yes the colour of the kit...they are all as big a part of our history and tradition as anything else. Gerrez I think you took my post the wrong way round. My point was that I think most of us lot would STILL support Liverpool FC even if we had no money or had suffered relegation etc. The name IS too important to put in the hands of whoever happens to be our owners at the time. It is something that has echoed through the generations and should continue to do so for many years to come.
