The critical difference is how different players are rated. Midfielders are rated by their overall play, their speed, passing, work rate, creativity and so on.

Strikers are rated heavily on goals, as that's their primary purpose. If you don't score goals, you're not a good striker. I wouldn't mind if Cabaye didn't score much as long as he was a fantastic CM, but when it comes to strikers, I want a guy who's proven to put balls in the back of the net. So far, even in Ligue 1, Maiga hasn't shown any particular talent in that area, so it concerns me.

The problem is that it's Ligue 1, where it's generally a slower pace, with more time on the ball, so it's easier to score goals. You would generally expect the goalscoring rate to drop when they move to the EPL as it's a lot tougher. That's fine if someone is banging in 20 goals a season in Ligue 1, because getting 10-15 over here would still be fantastic. However, if they're only scoring 10-15 over there, you have to wonder what they will manage to do over here.

Is he not more of a Gervinho style player (someone we were all desperately trying to emasculate ourselves for?)

As others have said, if Carr likes him, that's good enough for me!

Maiga can play on the wing, so I'm assuming he's a direct replacement for Lover.. but better?

I can't believe people are complaining about his goal scoring record when he isn't an out an out striker, Adebayor only hit 18 in 79 in Ligue 1 with Metz.

If he scores 8-10 goals in one season that's still good. As far as I'm concerned, Ba is our main striker and will be our 15-20 a season striker. Everyone else just chips in. Maiga's not coming here to be our main 20 a season striker. We don't know what his all round play is like. Best has only scored 3 goals thus far but I would have still considered him important as his all round play was decent. Maiga will probably end up playing on the wing mostly anyway, or Pards could be looking to go 3 up front.

I'd rather have Giroud, in all honesty. But the lad's going to be a NUFC player now, Pardew and Carr know more than we do about all of this. Lets be honest, it could be worse.

I am aware of this and totally understand where you're coming from, however that's not always an indication of how a player will do. There's been plenty of strikers who've been scoring for fun in places like Holland and France and can't get going at all in other European leagues (Afonso Alves, Huntelaar) , and others who on the face of it have fairly unremarkable records and less fanfare but hit the ground running adapting quickly and surprising everyone. Graeme Carr has seen him play a hell of a lot more than you or me so I'm going to trust him if he likes him that much.

He's predominantly played out on the wing, given a free role to cut inside, I think 19 in 41 is a pretty brilliant record from that position, obviously Carr and Pards see enough characteristics in him to make a good Prem Striker.

Oh yeah, because if a single player goes against the theory, then the ENTIRE theory is completely flawed.

    Helmet.

Of course there are players who break the mould. However, the above theory happens more often than not. There are very, very few French players who score as many goals, or more goals, than what they did in Ligue 1. There are players like Thierry Henry, but they are few and far between on the grand scale of things. It's reason enough to have some cause for concern, especially when there are contending Ligue 1 strikers who have already formed a formidable and proven goalscoring record over there.

I would love to think we could bring in Maiga and Giroud.......but unfortunately we aren't that willing to spend that much money or have that level of ambition.

I did not know that and to be honest I seem to be finding out new things about him by the minute as I'd simply never heard of him before we were linked to him and have never seen him play.

I just hope that he can finish and guarantee us 10-15 goals a season. And if we were offered Gervinho again for 15m I would probably say no as having seen him play more this season , hasn't impressed me with his finishing and passing!

Oh **** it , in Carr I trust.

Oh yes, just think of all the options we'd have in attack! Though at the minute I'd prefer we had options at Centre Back.

He's very Lovenkrands-ish as far as I can tell, apparently. Well. A left footed striker/winger. But better!

Maybe Pardew wants to go 433.. isn't that what Lille played? Cabaye would flourish more in that role ;)

Gives us more options than just an out and out striker.

I'm with you. I'd rather have someone like Giroud but **** it, he's gonna be a NUFC player so lets get behind the lad!

We can give this guy plenty of time to settle as well, because Ba, Best and even Ameobi can get us goals til the end of the season. If Carr thinks he is good enough, then that's good enough for me!
